The ... Empress of Australia, which is now in port will be withdrawn from the Oriyat service in October. Her last trip from Victoria will be October 25th. She will arrive here on November 18th, and will then proceed to England rid the Suez Canal. On arriving in England she is to go to dry. dock to undergo the necessary alterations to her hall and to have new engines and boilers installed. Then she will be put on the Atlantic service.
Seven new ships are to be constructed for the CPR.. Two will be passenger and freight vessels and Sve freighters: only. They will all be built on the Clyde. The new passenger liners are to he similar to the Montrose, Montcalm and Montelare, launched in 1921, and will be available a 1918. These ships will re- place older boats, which, in turn, will be disposed of as opportunity occurs. The Eve freight boats will be of 9,500 tons and are to have a sea speed of not less than fourteen knots. These are to he ready for service next year and are not being constructed for the purpose of re placing older tonnage, but to provide extra accommodation for the transport of Canada's growing exports.
At present the Canadian Pacific Rail- way has ten ships employed regularly on the St. Lawrence route, connecting with Hamburg. Antwerp, Southampton, Cherbourg, Quezatown, Liverpool, Bel- fast and Clasgow. In addition there are three that are leas up-to-date, which can Le used for, the passenger business as de- wands warrant. Next year, as stated, this service will be augmented by the addition of the Empress of Australia. whose new engines will give her a speed of eighteen knots.
