per cubic yard to be written off for this equipment assuming that it is valueless at the completion of the work. A con- tractor with the aid of this layout is not handling dirt for 11 cents per cubic yard to which must be added our three cents to pay for equipment, making the final cost 13 cents. Comparing this cost with the cost in other parts of the Colony where conditions are quite similar, I and that, we are effecting a saving of about GO per cent. which amounts on the whole job to 350,000 which amply justifies our expenditure of $18,000 for site develop- ment plant
About 20,000 square feet of land bas been reclaimed in water averaging 10 feet deep and some sixty feet of rubble mound for the sea wall has been placed in water
feet deep. The foundation for the Briquetting Plant has been put in and the greater part of the footings and foundation walls for the Briquetting building have been completed. The public highway has been widened from 20 to 40 fect for a distance of 350 feet to comply with the Government requirements, which has involved both a rock cut and a 20 foot Ell.
A Briquetting Plant by the well known makers of Briquetting Machinery, Yeadon Son & Co., Leeds, has been purchased and a sum of $7,250 paid on account. The balance remaining is 821,750 plus in- terest at 8 per cent. from July 1st, 1925, Under normal conditions the plant should have been up and in operation by this time.
During the year experiments have been carried on for the perfecting of a coal Briquette designed to take the place of frewood in Chinese kitchens, and we now have a formula for making a briquette which is a satisfactory substitute for fire- wood and which will cut the cost of fuel by 50 per cent. when sold at a figure that will net the Company substantial profit. This opens up a new and almost unlimited field for our briquettes. With the return to normal of the Colony's affairs we may claim that our prospects, will be brighter than ever.
