WAH YAN COLLEGE. HOLD WELL-ORGANISED SPORTS

AT HAPPY" VALLEY.

AN ARCHITECT'S FEES. ADJOURNMENT WHICH PROVED USELESS.

Before Mr. Justice Wood at the Sum-

Street.

On the HKFC ground at Happy Valley, yesterday afternoon, the Wahmary Court on the 4th inst. Mr. A. W. Yan College held its first annual athletic Graliam-Brown sued Li Tang Cheung for meeting. It is true that sports were held $250, balance due for work done by plain- by the College in 1941, but yesterday's tiff as 'architect in connection with a programme inaugurated what it is hoped house belonging to defendant in Sai: will prove an annual event.

Mr. J. T. Pryor for the plaintiff then Nothing succeeds like success and yesterday's organisers are to be run-stated that a contract had been made gratulated upon one of the best run whereby the defendant should pay $300. meetings that has taken place this year. Defendant, however, only paid $250 and Not content with keeping events up to alleged that plaintiff's agent had ex- schedule, the management even had time pressly stated that amount.

Mr. E. S. C. Brooks, for the defendant, to spare for an interval for tea for the visitors, which was served in the Craigen-

the scale of beld that according to architect'a fees in the Colony, plaintiff gower Club.

could not claim more than 8250.

The stands were crowded with students and their parents and friends, who took a keen interest in all the events, show ing the real spirit of sportsmanship.

The performance of Pang Kui Tung in clearing to feet in his heat for the long jump and winning the final, yesterday, with a jump of 18 feet 3 inches marks him as an athlete who will probably be heard of in years to come.

The feat of Pang Kui Tang, in clear ing feet 11 inches in the high jump is also an excellent performance.

The senior championship shield (pre- sented by Sir Shou Son Chow) was won by Leung Kin Fan (1st in 110 yards: 1st in 20 yards; Ist in 440 yards and 2nd in Long Jump) with 15 points out of

43.

"

The Junior Victor Luderum" for the year is Yuen Sik Lun, who obtained is points out of 45.

SOME HAPPY SPEECHES.

At the conclusion of the sports. Mr. Lim Moy Lan, before asking Mr. A. E Wood (Director of Education) to distri- bute the prizes, made a short speech.

Mr. Lim said that a few years ago the Cellege, had some sports of sorts," but yesterday's meeting was the first

Mr. Pryor disputed the contention, and asked for an adjournment to enable him to call witnesses.

Mr. Justice Wood consented, bu: stated that the plaintiff would have to pay any further costs incurred, and if no witnesses were brought, then judg ment would naturally go to the defend

Lant.

At the Summary Court yesterday. Mr. Pryor informed. His Lordship that he was not calling any witnessey.

Judgment with costs was, therefore, given to the defendant.

In Hongkong, said Mr. Lim. sports np- peared to be considered, a semi-social affair, whereas in "other parts of the world they were athletic. For this reason he was particularly pleased to see so many parents and friends present. Sports as well as study, he continued, were part of a boy's education. He hoped next year that, more entries would be received. but he could not guarantee to promise such a fine array of prizes Ural Caspisas as kind friends had given them this year.&W, Docks

E.K.&K. Wharfs, The speaker especially thanked Mr. Augustin Leong for the prize of a bicycle for the cycle event.

In conclusion, be thanked the H.K.F.C. for the loan of the ground, the S.C.A.A for the use of the pavilion; the Craigen gower Club for giving them a room for tea and last but not least the donors of prizes and all those who had helped in

aking the meeting success.

MR. WOOD'S SPEECH. Mr. A. E. Wood then presented the prizes. after which he thanked the Com- mitter for giving him the opportunity to be present on such an auspicious occa- sion.

Mr. Wood said that it had been a singularly successful meeting. He had been present at many athletic meetings, but he had seldom seen a meeting better organised. He congratulated the school on the possession of two excellent jumpers and some very promising runners.

"I think such a successful meeting." raid Mr. Wood before sitting down, ought to be celebrated with a whole holiday," which the Headmaster has kindly consented to grant."
