It has been well-known for some time that Mr. Seth intended to retire from Shanghai, but cone the less the occasion of his going comes as a matter of the greatest regret te his many friends and associates in business.

Mr. Seth's connection with the Far What is to be done? All of the evidence East is no slight one, for his father, Mr. might tend to show that the had been A. But let us suppose, for a moment, t JONES signed a cheque and after. da swore that it was a forgery How is the urime to be detected 7

There is, apparently, no difficulty tracing a signature. If ROBINSOs has the signature of JONES he' can fairly easily trace it on të another cheque. Of course. he has to get hold of a cheque, but that is not particularly difficult. At any rate it is obviously not an impossible proceed ing for a man, with the exercise of certain measure of ingenuity, to work up evidence that will enable him to repudiate one of his own cheques with confidence. Then, of course, if compensation is not forthcoming the next step would be an action against the bank.

ARRIVAL IN SHANGHAI,

Trained as an auditor, Mr. Seth left the service of the flongkong Court, anl. in 1911 was sent to Shanghai to under. take special accounting work. It may b said that from this arose the well-known firm of Seth, Mancell & McLure, today a very large organization in Shanghai and having affiliations in Hongkong and Manila. It did not, however, assume its present title until 1019.

A very great deal of specially import- at work has been carried out by this. firm, and especial mention may perhaps he made of the fact that they hold the appointment of court accountants for the Mixed Court, which practically carries with it the post of oficial court receivers. In eonnection with the Mixed Court it is worthy of mention that one piece of work which Mr. Seth undertook lasted fur ve years, this arising out of the litigation following the death of a former compra- dore of the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank. The case bad been going on for something like 15 years, and after Mr. Seth was

to administer "the appointed another five years' work was entailed. As a consequence of his ability and great patience, he then succeeded in bringing the matter to a satisfactory issue.
