HER NOVELS.

That Jane Austen had a thorough knowledge of women but did not know enough about men to trust herself to let them have more than a few words in conversation with each other was one of the points made by Mr. A. UNEMANCIPATED WOMEN

He thought it needless to waste too much pity on her uhemancipated women, for they got a good deal of fun out of life. The pity was that their interests were so restricted. Marriage was the only career open, to them, had so the mothers and aunts were all matchmakers. Harriage and giving in marriage were Jany's one perpetual theme, She knew her women intimately, but the men zhe Hustruts only knew from the outside.. were presented through the eyes of their wives, brothers through their sisters. The kissing must have been done in the deepest, res cesses of the shrubbery. There are five and twenty shrubberies in her novels and not one kiss."
