AGED WOMEN'S WEALTH HOARDE

AMAZING- DISCOVERY. WORTH £10,000 AND SPENT ONLY 10/- A WEEK.

Remarkable revelations of the hoarded wealth of an old woman who had lived in one of the poorest districts of the city were made at an inquest held in Man- chester, when a verdict of death from untural causes was returned upon Miss Clara Alice Jones, aged 74, who was found dead in ber house in Rice Street, Liverpool Road, recently.

The dead woman, who had lived alone since the death of her sister eight years: 489 was not seen about throughout the day. She was known to be of reserved and somewhat eccentric habits, but, as it was very unusual for her not to be out at soine portion of the day, a neighbour became alarmed, and looking through one of the dirty windows saw her lying

on a sofa.

PARIS, March 9th- Ski-ing and lugeing are not by any means the only sports that are the order of the day at St. Moritz There is also teanis; and for the Ave o'clock ten hour and the magic hours after dinner, there is dancing, the most popular of all.

Tennis wear has undergone as great a change as the game itself has since Suzanne Lenglen came along to prove that women's play need not necessarily be restricted to a cautious stand at the back line. Suzanne, herself, revolu tionised it to begin with by appearing in loose-fitting, one-piece garments in fire washing pleated lawn or heavy weight silk, with never a sign of a nego sleaven to them. Last year, bash mixed with crêpe de Chine was about the most fashionable combination to be seen, and this year, here come the designers with inffctas: Out model. I have in mind was carried out in a mixture of taffetus and kasha. The full, pleated check skirt was in taffetas, and the sweater was in beige jersey boucle finished with collar, cuffs match and pockets of brown taffetas ça the dominating colour of the check in the skirt. Crêpe de Chine, too, is much worn, either by itself or combined with kasha. If the skirt is of crêpe de Chine. the sweater or jumper will be of fine jersey or kasha and will be finished with collar, cuffs, jabots and other accessories of crêpe de Chine. Or else: the skirt, will

There were also discovered four bank be of kasha and the top of crepe denotes each valued at £500, and securities Chine, and always a close-fitting hat, as and other documents showed that alte simple in design as a man's, a beret in gether the dead woman was worth over velvet that droops in a rakish fashion to the side or else an all-enveloping Jittle cap of jersey will" he added.

Communication was established with Mr. William Wolstenholme, who had acted as the solicitor for Miss Jones, and upon an entry being forced she was found to be dead. A search of the house showed that over 22,000 in cash was secreted in various parts.

The bulk of the money was in small coins. There were I two-shilling pieces, 1,448 half-crowns, 2,360 shillinga, 1,130 sixpeners, and C threepenny pieces: Some of the money was found in a sack., which was so heavy that it was more than one man could do to lift it

The foundation of this fortune, it is understood, was laid by Miss Jones's father, who was a master painter. Miser as she undoubtedly was, it is stated that she refused to increase the rents of her houses. She complained of the increased taxes she was called upon to pay, and distraint had to be levied more than once in order to recover the money due.

Mr. Wolstenholme told the Corner that the house was in a deplorable con-

An other tradition too, that has gone by the board as far as sports clothes is concern-local charities is not confirmed. So far, ed is the law forbidding any but white to be worn. It is now correct and smart to wear any colour you choose, provided is suits you and provided also it looks wel in strong sunlight with the harsh tones of terre battue or asphalt for a background. If these two considerations are observed, then you can forget there ever was a rule that restricted you to the narrow limit of white, and don blue, green yellow, red or mauve as you' please As a rule, though, the soften tints of these colours are preferred, saxe and periwinkle blues rather than cornflower bluc, bois de rose and vieux rose rather than red and almond and tilleul green rather than emerald.

A NOVELTY.

The line remains much the same as it has been for some seasons past. That is, there is a short skirt which looks narrow and straight but into which fallness has

Coloured spangles are perhaps the latest invention most favoured by the designers for beautifying their models. These are down' on in row and so closely together that they look like strips of ahining coloured armour, and corative.

TRANSFORMATIONS. There is a stir among coiffeurs to de feat the bob and the shingle once and for pll; and a repercussion is noticeable when the smart ones foregather of an evening. at any of these dances at the winter plained that neither the bob nor the shingle was sufficiently individualistic to express the varying personality of the modern women; but up till now they have been as so many voices crying, in a wilderness of feminine obstinacy. Last year there were godets in any quantity to be seen; this year, there is not a one, all fullness be ing obliged by the latest dictate of fashion to take the form of pleats, either skirts pleated all round in elim, smart knife pleats; or else inverted box pleats inlet in front or at the sides.
