A Weekly

Review dealing with matters of interest to

all local motorists.- Running costs of a small car.

[BY AN OWNER-DRIVER.]

WATCH FOR ECONOMY. The running costs of a car were dis cussed last week. The conclusion reached

was that five cents a mile for petrol and tyres for a small ownar-driven car, was a fair estimate which should not be exceed- ed if reasonable care was exercised

If the owner-driver is 'careless and takes no trouble to ace that his tyres are"pro- perly inflated and that the petrol je not stolen these costs may exceed five cents

a mile.

It is a pity that there is nothing cor- responding to the Southport Sands in this Colony., Many an owner-driver would like to "speed up his car, although few would care to approach the 100 miles per hour rate even if the car were built for that sort of thing.

SOME COSTS.

The local premium for an "al in insurance policy for a car worth about $2,000 seems to be $100. The annual icense for a light car is sixteen dollars and the driver's license is five dollars.

The cost of a garage is an item that, varies very much indeed. It is the garage problem that prevents many people from having a small car. It is not a very ex pensive matter to put up a garage big enough for a four-seater, hat the burden may be heavier if it is necessary to store the car in a public garage. It is difficult. in some places, to obtain the site for a garage; but it is possible to erect quite a useful garage for a small car for about

five hundred dollars.

During the first two years the bills for repairs for the car should be very little, but in any case, the costs for repairs depends very much upon the way in which the car is handled.

Even in the open road near to Fan- ling there is always the possibility of a pedestrian or some animal, a dog, a pig or a water huffalo, appearing at the most inopportune moment.

The unexpected too often happens sud denly on the roasis of this Colony.

There is two litre English, sports model which has a maximum speed of 73 miles per hour. The tax is £12 so that the car is about twelve horse-power, tax rating.

That particular car, costs £5 with all the latest fittings such as four wheel brakes and overhead valves.

A delightful car for a spin along, the Southport Sands: no doubt a car that quickly picks up speed anywhere, but not a car to be presented to a youthful driver in Hongkong. High speeds are not to be encouraged in this Colony.

LOCAL BUS SERVICES.

THIRD PARTY RISKS.

In this Colony the average value of human life is not so great as in Eng land. Therefors it seems probable that the claims that are likely to be made in the case of accidenta to pedestrians or

tr

even to hired drivers would be less than at borge.

Perhaps the insurance companies have not taken that into account...

The wise motorist insures against fire, accident indeed against everything poss ible.. Accidents will happen even to the most camfully driven eara Insurance saves a great deal of anxiety and the possibility of anxious litigation.

A LADY DRIVER.

In this Colony there are a few Indy drivers, but there should be many more. During the war any number of girls drove, constantly, quite heavy motor lorries. The army--usually conservative with regards to anything that affects women with

or machinery-employed Indy chauffeurs for all classes of vehicles.

If any one doubts the ability of the fair sex in the matter of stamina hë-- for only men would have such a Boubt-- might be persuaded to amend his views on the subject after due consideration of the triumph of Miss Violette Cordery,

If we now sum up "other costs," after petrol and tyres have been paid for, we have a total of about $950 a year..

That is made up of (a) Insurance at $100; (b) Tax and driver's license at 821; (e) garage (if owned by car-driver) 230; (d) Oil and grease at 830; (e) Repairs at $50.

·

The-nctual total is $251 per annum which, on a year's run of 6,000 miles (500 wiles a month) is less than five cents a

mile.

THE TOTAL COSTS."

It is admitted that the garage may be more costly than is estimated above. On the other hand it is fair to suggest that the figure of five cents a mile for petrol and tyres is one that allows of a consider able margin.

It is also fair to say that, with a small owner-driven car, the total running costs of 500 miles per month can be brought down to $30 a month.

זה

Even if we had to pay 8100 a month for the running costs it would be well worth it. The difference between having a motor-car and being without one in this Colony is something difficult to describe.

It may be said that there is no truth in the rumour that the service is on trial for one month. Passengers will be pleased to know that it will continue for at least three years. It is incredible that it should fail to attract because it is such a good service.

The facts of the case are simple, but the accomplishment of this lady driver is so remarkable that it is almost in- creditle...
