With only two arrivals less than during the previous twenty-four hours," the freight entered yesterday showed
very big drop compared with the preceding period. While cargo for Hong- kong totalled about the sama (there was
slight rise of about 100 cons), the freight entered for ports beyond was leas by: over 13,000 tons.
The returns for the twenty-four hours yesterday, showed ended at 9 am. that at that hour there were 66 vessels in the harbour, of which 39 were British. The arrivals during the above period numbered twelve, ri-seven British, ong Dutch, one French, one Japanese and two Chinese. The departures over the same period came to six, and these were for the following ports For Shanghai, one Japanese: for Saigon, one British; for Anioy, one British for Hanhai, one Chinese for S.V. Yesterday the Hongkong Telephone Company engineers were engaged in telephone êable in the Far East. The cable enters the water near the Post Office and emerges between the Star Ferry wharf and the Kowloon Huilway clock tower. The calle, which replaces a cable laid about a year ago that proved faulty, is a 100 pair Henley cable and measures 2,500 yards long, and weighs "about 30 tars. The laying should be completed by Lo-day and the change over of wires will take place in a few days, tine.
The total number of deck passengers entered for the twenty-four hours ended nt. a.m. yesterday was 127, the largest entry being 65, and the next is örder 33.
