MANIFESTO OF NATIONALIST

GOVERNMENT.

We have received from Mr. Ping Sheung Foo, Superintendent of Customs and Commissioner of Foreign Affairs, the following translation of a manifesto to the Foreign Powers issued by the Nationalist Government at Canton. A reference was made to the manifesto in our leading article yesterday.

"In recent years the Peking Govern- ment, has been usurped by one militarist after another, whose maladministration has been directly contrary to the people's will, and has aroused the detestation of the citizens of the Republic. The Peking Government has long ceased to be a Government in fact.

According to reports reaching Hong- kong, four Canton boycott pickets have been taken into custody by the Portuguese authorities at Macao, fullowing the seizure by the pickets of a Hongkong steam

launch and cargo junk.

Mr. Jenkin I take it, your Lordship, that the order is suspended?

Mr. Alabaster said that he was not concerned.

His Lordship allowed the case to go on, and made the comment given above.

Witnesa said that he was afraid if he could not get back to his present job

that he would not be able to secure a living.

TRIS NONSENSE.”

Replying to further questions put by Mr. Alabaster, witness said that at the Naval Yard, a number plate was handed to him when he went to work in the morning, and he returned it when he finished in the evening.

His Lordship: Then what is all this nonsense about not telling?

Inspector Fallon, replying to His Lord- ship, said that he thought witness was one of those casual coober employed at the Naval Yard who was given a tem- porary number when they were engaged.

Mr. James Colin Owen, the foreman of the jury, rose to say that witness's state ment as to leaving his number on finish- ing work was correct, but there were no grounds for his reticence in divulging the number,
