UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIP.

By their success yesterday in the Doubles Championship Event, D. Laing and A. A Rumjahn have won the Cups outright, this being their third consecu tive year.

They were opposed by Wong Boon, Hin and H. C. Hung yesterday in the Challenge Round, the former putting up a splendid match. The standard of play was good and at times brilliant and the game was very interesting to watch.

Laing and Bumjahn partnered very well and proved their superiority by better judgment and tactics. There was little to choose between the two, except that Rumjaha played more spectacular tennis. Laing played one of his best games this season and was seen to nd vantage in the first and third sets, nx. calling his partner most of the time. Rumjahn played a consistant and re sourceful game throughout, and inspired confidence in his partner:

BETTER THAN OLD DOGMA,

In paying a tribute to the scientists of today for their devotion to truth, he declared unreservedly that the theory of evolution was "more satisfying thap the old dogma of a special creation to which unfortunately the theologians of the Renaissance committed themselves." As Dr. Gore retreated further from ground that in the past has been so when he would stand and how he would strongly occupied, one began to wonder defend the essential position of Chris- tianity.

He soon made it clear that while con-

"The parable of the Ascension of our Lord." he insisted, is the only form in which the glorification of Christ could have been expressed to the imagination of man."

And again :---

"In the first chapters of Genesis: what we have is not history, but ideas in the form of a story. From these stories we are intended to learn great inoral truths. We should regard Adam. and Eve not as historical individuals, but as symbols of man and woman."

He seemed indeed, to feel that not only the Church but mankind as a whole had shown remarkable lack of imagina tion in taking literally what was meant to be symbolical. The Apostles, he ap- peared to suggest, have shared the fate of later pieturesque, or ironical writers in being misunderstood.

"When we say," he declared, that He ascended into Heaven we refer to & vision actually seen by the Apostles which was intended to express through the imagination of man of all ages. His exaltation into the divine glory which to us is inconceivable and in- describable."

While giving all credit to science, which he described as the chief glory of our age, he pointed out that it could' no account for the emergence of those spiritual qualities of man that formed the basis of the Christian, religion.

We will leave you," he seemed to say to the scientists; in possession of the material world and of man's body, but we claim the purpose behind the world and we claim, above all, man's soul."

Used in asthma, ephedrine forces the muscles to relax around the air passages in the lungs. The effective area of the lungs is thereby increased and breathing becomes easier. Its use in a head cold is to close the ducts of the secreting glands, thus relieving the condition known as a running nose.

Because.tests indicate that it is more powerfalind more perfect, ephedrine is expected to supplant adrenalin, which is obtained from the adrenal glands of animals and put to a variety of clinical
