AIMING AT SHALLEE FIELDS.

1,377 AIR FORCE DOCTORS. Mr. Basi Peto (C., Barnstable); who wanted to do away with a separate Air Ministry and Transport Ministry, said that the estimates of the Air, Ministryed about the so-called favourites. provide for a medical staff of 1,377, which works out at one for every 26 of the whole personnel of the Air Force.

Sir Samuel Hoare, the Air Minister, in a general reply, said be was authorised by the Prime Minister to state that the Government would make arrange ments for a special debate on the subject of a single Defence Ministry, when Mr. Baldwin would put his viewa on, the matter before the House and members would also have, an opportunity of say ing what they thought.

Cdr. Burney asked whether the Gov. ernment would be ready to abide by the result of that debate, but Sir S. Hoare said that to give such an assurance would be going farther than he was able at present. He claimed that, as far as possible triplication of common services in the Navy, Army, and Air Force was being uvcided. Thus the Royal Army Service Corpa bought clothing for the Royal Air Force and the Admiralty bought its torpedoes.

Hospitals were not established separate- ly for the loyal Air Force except in places where no Army or Navy hospitals existed. Similarly with chaplains. " We do not want to set up a big force of Air Force chaplains," said the Minister amid laughter. There were only 27 Royal

Air Force chaplains.

He begged that criticism of the estab- lishment, of an independed air force "a hardy annual "should'écase, and announeed for the first time that the Colwyn Economy Committee had rejected the proposal to distribute the work of the Air Ministry between the Admiralty and War Office on the ground both of economy and efficiency.

The Air Force now has ter parachutes. and in a very short time no airman will go into the air without one.

"Without subsidies," said the Air Minister, civil aviation would come to an end in every country," but he hoped. that it would be self-supporting after a number of years.

The same writer remarks-Under the revised conditions of the Derby, owners may strike out their entries by the last Tuesday in March with a forfeit of £25. There is a further forfeit stage of £50 eight days before the date of the race, after which the full liability of 2100 is incurred. A NOVEL GOLF PROBLEM.

He took his giblick and played his shot. with the result that he removed a large lump of soft turf. This remained on his club and the ball remained embedded in the Tomy of turf. SHAKESPEARE THEATRE FIRE.

Fire practically destroyed the famous Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Strat- ford-on-Avon last month.

Fire brigades, aided by the towns- people, saved the museum and picture gallery adjoining the theatre.

In spite of the Minister's plea, men bere arged the need for a single Ministry of Defence, and Viscount Sandon (C., Shrewsbury) seemed to voice the general opinion when he said that good would come from the debate if it succeeded in ennveying to the Prime Minister, that I must congratulate Stratford-on- there was a very strong feeling in the House for a Ministry of Defence, and that members desired to see it formally established. *.
