Mr. Churchill is kecaly attracted to the possibilities of deriving a considerable Oriental Navigations revenue out of a betting tax and a memorandum which he has had prepared by Treasury officials for the information of the Cabinet, in understood to contain in skeleton form a plan which exports believe would produce several millions Raabe...

son-Hicks

Three plans have been advocated, and it is understood that all of them have been examined from the actuarial, as well from the administrative point of view by the Treasury. They are:-'

1. The licensing of bookmakers and the tevving of a tax on turnover.

Taxation by licence.

2. Totalisators.

Of these the first is believed to be the one which experts have found likely 'to be most profitable. An important point urged in regard to it which it is under stand has appealed strongly to. Mr. Churchill is that in addition to the revenue which will be directly provided by, the betting tax. the disclosures of books and accounts will reveni much in formation at present hidden from the income tax authorities, and the conse. quence will be an addition to the income

WIRELESS ON TRAINS.

GREAT WESTERN EXPERIMENT,"

A further interesting experiment in wireless reception on a moving train was tried by. the Great Western Railway Company recently with gratifying ults. An Ethnedyne Burndent seven- valve instrument was installed on the Cornish Riviera express leaving Pad dington at 10.30 am. This train runs without a stop from London to Ply- mouth, a distance of 226 miles, the longest non-stop railway express journey in the world.

The receiving instrument, with merely a frame aerial, placed in a first-class compartment, operated five loud speakers in the dining-cara and twenty head- phones. On the outward journey a cer tain amount of interference by induction was experienced owing to the working of the dynamo 'underneath the carriage used for the generation of the electric light. By a mechanical adjustment dur- ing the homeward rûn this was complete ly eliminated, and reception was of the most perfect character. The speed of the train made no difference whatever to the clarity of tone, hut it was noticeable that there was considerable fading as the train passed through a tunnel. For instance, Miss Mavis Bennett, singing in London, was picked up through Daventry, while the homeward-bound train was at Brent. The voice was perfectly clear until Brent tunnel was reached, when it gradually died away, only to some again in full volume as the tunnel was cleared. Later Paris and Aberdeen were tuned in with perfect results-

This attempt to instal wireless for the benefit of railway travellera on & long journey is yet purely in an experimentali stage, and the Great Western Company have no present intention of permanently equipping their trains with receiving sets. The experiment, however, shows that there are no serious engineering difficulties to be overcome, and wirelesaj od trains may be effective. at any time if there is a serious demand for it.

AT A MEETING. WOMAN SHAREHOLDER WISHES SHE WERE A DIRECTOR.

Following the speech of Sir Guy Granet at the annual meeting of the LM.S. As less work would now fall on the Board the shareholders suggested that the other directors' salaries should be reduced in order to pay the salary of the new appointment.

Excessive perspiration is a sign of weakness

Not, of course, the perspiration due to heavy exertion" or heat, but the "Cold perspiration" and nightsweats which accompany weakening diseases, such as Tuber- culosis. These nightsweats are not only a sign of weak- neas, but they also weaken the body. To conquer this weakness you should build up your forces right from the core by strengthening the body-cells with calcium, their vital constituent. Kalzana will do this for you. Kalzana tablets contain calcium in a special chemical com bination, which causes the calcium to be readily absorbed by the body and retained. The strengthening influence of Kalzana will be noticed even after afew days by a lessening of nightaweats. In Tuberculosis. The strengthening effect of Kalzana is of special importance in Tuberculosis. The fortified cells are more. easily able to resist the attacks of the bacilli, while an excessive content of calcium in the organismi causes calciumi to be deposited in and around the infected places in the lungs, by which process the bacilli are "caged in so that they can do no further harm.
