THE STAR FERRIES. PASSENGER'S COMPLAINT AND
THE COMPANY'S REPLY.
A correspondent has written to us complaining of what he terms the "Star Ferry Company's disregard of the com- fort of their passengers. He is particu inrly, critical of the new awnings on the boats which he states are made of cotton duck instead of canvas and, as a con sequence, are practically useless for keep- ing out the rain. The Company's reply is a simple one-that the awnings are now made of the best British canvas in the market.

carly morning, there were literally streams of water pouring through these awnings, and passengers were huddled together, standing in the midship part like sheep in a pen.
Not only are the awnings made of the wrong sort of canvas-ard the new ones are not canvas at all but cotton duck, of a poor quality which let the water through very easily, but where there are holes they are not even repaired properly. A few clumsy stitches are put in by some inexperienced person, and the result is solely to reduce the size of the hole and
not to close it.
If these new oil-burning ferries do not emit any matter from the funnels likely to burn holes in the awnings, there is no reason why one awning should not be suficient, provided it is made of the proper material. No. 2 or 3 Scotch canvas, or Willesden green would be per fectly water proof and sun-proof, so why should a wealthy company like the "Star" Ferry Company purchase cotton duck? It must be from either a mis dis taken idea of economy,
total # regard of their duties towards the public for which the public are to blame for allowing themselves to be ignored.
If there is any danger of burning matter coming out of the funnels of these oil-burners, the only remedy is a double awning, the top one treated in order to resist sparks.
In conclusion, it is marvellous what the Kowloon people will put up with without a kick
Deprived of water in their houses, without a single kick, they get an excess of water on the ferries and still don't kick. Yours, etc.,
J.
Mr. F. H. Crapnell, the Secretary of the "Star"Ferry Company, speaking to a Daily Press representative counter- ed the suggestion that inferior canvas was used for awnings. After many ex- periments, he said, the Company decided on the use of the best British canvas on the market. It is caaras made in Man- chester.
"Personally I am in favour of wooden awnings," Mr. Crapsell continued, "but they are quite out of the question in view of the typhoona which visit Hongkong almost every year,
"With regard to the danger of fire, I need only point out that should a fire break out on one of our ferries, a panic would be certain to ensue, with results that your readers can well imagine. With canvas awnings the risk of fire is almost negligible..
