(the General Managers of the Company); yesterday at noon, for the purpose of receiving the Report of the General Managers, together with a State- ment of Accounts for the year ended December 31st, 1993.

Mr. D. G. M. Bernard (Chairman) pre- sided, and there were also present Sir Robert Ho Tung, and Messrs. C. Bernard Brown, A. H. Compton. A. S. Gubbay and H. P. interest in the subject of crude rubber, In view of the wide spread 'public with particular reference to cultivation by American capital, it is perhaps timely to state that the United States Rubber Company now has 194,000 acres of BD- proximately 194 square miles, of rubber plantation lands in the Far East, repro- seating an investment of approximately $25,000,000. Of this area, 74,837 acres, or about 117 square miles, equal to 80 per cent of the total, are planted with over 7,000,000 rubber trees, and 49,004 Acres, or over 78 square miles, equal to 67 per cent of the planted areas, are in bearing and produced approximately 20,000,000 pounds of rubber in 1925. A force of more than 20,000 is continuously employed on the Company's plantations. In six years, or by 1931, it is estimated that production will have increased 75 per cent, or to 35,000,000 pounds, per annum, due to planting of further areas, maturity of trees already in bearing, and to production from trees reaching the bearing stage.

Twenty-three years ago, or in 1903, the Company obtained extensive concessions in South America. However, this ven-

ture did not work out satisfactorily and,

after years of effort, the project was dropped and energies directed towards taking up operations in other locations.

Sixteen years ago, or in 1810, the Com- pany completed its xst surveys in the Far East. As a result, extensive conces The CHAIRMAN said:--Gentlemen,-Thesions were acquired in Sumatra, and Report and Accounts having pow been 14,000 acres, or about 2 square miles, were planted in 1911.
