In course of time, however, we may hope to zet craisers of the most powerful class embodied in the Royal Indian Navy. The red pennant hitherto flown by vessels of the Royal Indian Marine is to be replaced by the White Ensign, an honour which the educated community has been quick to appreciate. The functions of the new force are to be those of an active naval organisation. It will perform such duties as the Indian Government may require of it in the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf it will chart the waters. of the Indian Ocean, and be responsible for the naval defence of all ports under the control of the Government.

Commissioned rank in the Royal In- dian Marine has been open to Indinas for some years past. Nona have come forward, however, probably because there were few facilities for naval training. Under the new scheme this defect will he remedied. While the Royal Indian Navy remains at its present strength the number of vacancies for executive officers will be limited to three per year. One of these appointments is to be reserved for an Indian, provided a candidate of suitable qualifications presents himself. Indian youths now at public schools in England may be the first to compete for such appointments, which carry with then the King's commission. Eventual- ly the Dehra Dua military academy is expected to supply cadets for the Navy.
