FLOWER AND VEGETABLE SHOW.
HONGKONG HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S FINE DISPLAY. The drill hall and grounds of the Hong kong Volunteer Defence Corps presented very bright scene yesterday, on the occasion of the annual Flower and Veget able Show, given under the auspices of the Hongkong Horticultural Society.
The Botanic Gardens had a fine dis- play of fernery and begonias, at the Eastern end of the drill hall, while six tables with cut flowers in vases were arranged down the centre of the room.
C148
It was also necessary to record a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Dyer, Mrs. Homell, Mrs. Murdock and Mrs. Hall and to Messrs. Gibbs, Green, Plummer, Robinson, Chon Po Sien, Dowbiggin, Porry and Piary for their valuable as sistance; and last, but by no leash he would include the name of the Society's indefatigible Secretary. Mr. E. B. C. Hornell The adjective "inde fatigiblo always seemed to go with the name of secretary; but in the case of fe. Hornell it was used in no idle sense. The amount of work he got through was well known and appreciated by all who had had the privilege of working with

At the Western end of the grounds him. were displayed Ow! Brand" Gypsum. In conclusion, Mr. Hall voiced an Fertiliser, which makes the gram grow appeal from the Committee for печ greener and has obtained, in addition, blood. Old members were gradually wonderful results locally with bean peas, onions as was evidenced by the winning exhibits on view yesterday.
The local agenta are the Simplex Plaster Co., Powell's Building.
In the centre of the Eastern shed were a wonderful display, of vegetables (in cluding white carrota) grown from seeds supplied by Sutton and Sons, Reading, England; and a brilliant display of sweet peas, grown from seeds supplied by Yates & Co., of Sydney. Bath these ex- hibits were kindly sent by Mr. Ho Kom Tong and were not for competition
The end stall was occupied by Brunner Mond & Co (China); Ltd., where there were on view Crescent Fertiliser for flowers, vegetables and lawns.
The majority of the lowers and véget. ables for competition or exhibition only were arranged in three long sheds and made one of the best shows given for some years,

dropping out and new ones were wanted to replace them. The Society needed, active support rather than money. · He believed all present were fower lovers and although it was not possible for all to have elaborate gardens yet almost everyone grew a few pot plants and the committee would be only too willing to institute further classes for smaller ex-
hibítors.
Through the generosity of Mr. Plum mer, their past President, they this year had a cup to be won in competition by prizes before. This would be continued amateur gardeners who had not won
if it received uhcient sapport. Mr. fall then called upon Lady Clementi to present the prize after which she was handed a bouquet in silver holder.
Cheers for Lady Clementi brought pro- ceedings to a close.

MR. HALL'S SPEECH. Before the distribution of the prizes Mr. F. C. Hall, the President, on behalf of the Hongkong Horticultural Society, welcomed the guests. The large at tendance, he said, bad gleddened the hearts of the Committee as they now felt thoroughly justified in having made their decision to carry on the show, in spite of many disabilities,
A
That circumstances had been sorely against them was well understood by all And the Committee's heartiest, thanks were due to all who had so loyally re- ponded to the appeal to do all possible to make the annual creat the success it had been. He thought be was not ex- aggerating when he used the word
"success,"
as this had been fully borne out by the splendid exhibits received more especially those from the lower. levels. Among the names to be found in this section were those of Mr. and Mrs, Ho Kom Tong, Sir Robert and Lady Eo Tung and Mr. Choo Po Sion, all staunch adherents of the society. They would slap notice that Mr. "Ho Fook had again won the Challenge Cup for Hot house plants.
