C. Goodenough, the chairman of Barclays Bank, and refused emphatically to encourage the forebodings of those who see in the present signa "the passing of a great people.”

I confess I do not share their .opinion," he said: "Through all these years of trade depression we have still been the greatest exporters of magulac- tured goods in the world. The excep tional depression has been largely due to temporary financial conditions, and I have strong hopes that these are now coming to an end."
