The first visit was made to the First Prison. Peking, at Yaochisching, but sido Changyi Gate, where it was obe served that the Prison covered an area of 100 mou and is capable of accomme- dating 1.000 prisoners. At present, there are 309 Chinese mala prisoners and 73 female prisoners, together with 23 Russian prisoners. All these prisoners are put under Jabour, in accordance with their abilities, the labour including type setting, wood-cut printing and litho graphy, the manufacture of Fattan, bamboo and iron wares, eleaning of rice and similar work. There is a separate factory for each department of labour which, to the pleasant surprise of the visitors, was perfect in every respect. It
