Your proposals generally would stand thus:

That the miners are required to work an additional hour without any extra remuneration directly;

That wages would have to be reduced in districts varying from small amounts in South Wales of 6d. a week up to 5. and a week in some of the more important districts, and rising to over 15. in Lancashire and Cheshire; „

That the owners would have to effect a reduction of 10 per cent. on other costs; That the railway rates would have to be reduced by 25 per cent. ; ·

That we should have to contemplate the immediate, if temporary, dismissal of 100.000 men and

That' at the end of this the industry would be earning no profits, but would be run on a loss of ad. a ton.

Mr. Williams: Well, the position that would have to be faced at the end of April would probably be worse than is shown here. Under the seven-hour day it is absolutely hopeless to maintain the industry.
