HONGKONG DAILY PRESS,
SCOTTISH SPORT. SCOTLAND'S VICTORY OVER FRANCE
CELTIC IN CHAMPIONSHIP FORM.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
EDINBURGH, January 6th Scotland opened the International Rugby search in promising fashion. To defeat France in Paris by 20 points to is a notable achievement. The extent of the victory must be regarded as all the more remarkable in that it has been accomplished without any trials, and alsó in view of the fact that owing to the frost and snow few cluba games have been plased in Scotland daring the past few weeks. The selectors certainly showed sound judgment in their choice of a national team under dificult circum- stances, but they were materially helped by their good fortune to have at their command no fower than twelve of the fifteen who defeated England in the game last March at Murrayfield. This year Scotland is defending the International" Championship honour and the Calcutta. Cup. The manner in which, she has sur- mounted the first hurdle suggests that her opponents will have z. diffetükk, task in therr attempt to regain the spoils. "
The better team won, but the French cxerted considerable pressure. Their for wards were as good as ours in many ways, but they did not know as much about the Ener points of forward play. In the set parts of serum and line-out they were quite useful, but they had ne conception of footwork, and were not astute it work- ing the ball back from loose squashes. The French could make nothing of our dribbling The general work of our pack was distinctly good, and their footwork was particularly noteworthy, nono excel- icd Bannerman and our two outsides in the back row, Gillies and Scott. Th first-nated was great in every way, but on general form he was excelled by Davies, who was the outstanding forward on the field. Compared with our backs the French were novices, They had no idea of passing, and always seemed to be in a state of momentary coma when the ball came to any of them. Our men, on the other hand, kept going hard, and worked in unison when passing was the tactics of the moment. None excelled Dykes, he was our best back. Nelson was his usual dependable self, and Wad- dell played a very discerning gamd Wallace was Wallace of recent inter- national matches. We will miss in more ways than one his very distinctive swerve. All our rear men were good defenders, and they could attack cleverly when op- portunity offered, which, as the game was played, was not too often. Drysdale was As sound as ever.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13TH, 1926
The game, unfortunately, was marred by off-side play. Had the referee, been » inclined to be academie or rigid, there would scarcely have been any play at all. The French forwards took so many liber- ties that he had to turn a Nelsonic eye- upon the least flagrant of their offences, and it has to be confessed that latterly our own men were rot immaculate.m

SPATE OF LEAGUE MATCHES.
Following old customs, the Scottish- soccer clubs ushered in the New Year with three-days programme of matches. Out side the League limits there took place the annual contest between those two premier clubs, Queen's Park and Corin- thians, and a draw, was quite a good re- sult of a capital game, the Scots being superior in some departments the Ebg lish men in other.
In the League on New Year's Day the majority of the games were of the nature, pl local rivalry, and play, was generally level. Thus, the Airdrie and Falkirk, Caltic and -Rangers,- Partick Thistle and Clydebank matches ended in draws; while Aberdeen, Motherwell, Raith Bovers, and St. Johnstone only won by the odd goal. Kilmarnock had a notable 41 away win over St.-Mirren, and Ribs had a surprise victory over Hearts
On the second day Celtic increased their lead for the Championship. Queen's Park collapsed before them in the last guarter of an hour, and 'the amateurs thus competed with Clydebank for the wooden spoon. Dundee United took an other step up the ladder by defeating Kilmarnock they have administered a good few shocks to clube of longer stand- ing, and it must be said for "them that their successes have not been of the luky order,

On the third day Celtic finished with a win which practically assured them of the Championship, a rather unfortunate circumstance, as this robs the competi tion of much of its interest. There was cae genuine surprise, when St. John- atone-not baly defeated Bibs, but had a substantial majority of three goals.
