W. Powells.......

1 bagged recently a big panther; 8 feet long, that killed about 300 cattle and which was the pest of the locality. My son went to shoot deer ometime before X'mas and bagged one and when he returned he informed me that near about Muradpur, 5 miles froni Contai Road station, there was a leopard. So I and my son during the last X'mas holidays. went there for the purpose of killing the beast. Two nights we tried but failed, as the leopard did not come to the goal. Early on the morning of the 30th Decem- ber last, while I was after some par tridges, I heard the jackal's peculiar call at a distance. I at once came back to camp and took my rifle and hastened to the apot. I found two jackals in a piece of open land-one making the call I searched the vicinity but failed to locate the leopard or anything. And about half an hour after my return to the camp. a man came running and informed me that the leopard had killed a cow the previous night and the carcase was lying in a field. It was in exactly the same place-about 10 bighas north of the spot where the jackals called. The leopard had eaten only the chest and went away, probably owing to daylight."

I closely surveyed the place and de- cided to sit up in the night over the kill. I suspected the leopard was to the south of the kill in some small jungle or bushes. The wind was blowing from the north, so as far as possible to avoid the wind, I dug a pit 70 yards east of the kill, and opposite the pit tied two legs of the dead. cow to two posts driven deep into the ground. After making all these arrange ments I returned to camp and after taking my day meal at 4 p.m. I again went to the pit with my son and sat there waiting for the leopard to come. Just affer dusk we saw the jackals that were feeding on the carcase suddenly stampede and T call ed out "feu" I at once understood that
