story of the loss of his Majesty's ship Hampshire and the death of Earl Kitchener, as gathered from official sources, states that it is absolutely untrue that the Admiralty has kept back important papers which would throw a new light on the disaster, and describes as a "ridiculous and wicked' fabrication "na allegation that spies bad. been previously found in the vessel and
shot.
The considered view of the Admiralty, 'based on all available ovidence, he said,
is that the Hampshire was sunk by a
moored mine laid by the Germans, and there is no evidence that any signals were made by the vessel after the explosion.
The First Lord's statement was made in the form of a written answer to a ques tion by Captain Waterhouse (U., Leices- ter. 5.), who asked whether he was now in a position to give fresh information as to the circumstances in which the loss of the Hampshire occurred.

5. There is no evidence that any signals were made by the Hampshire after the explosion; she appears to have sunk in a period variously estimated as between ten and twenty minutes from the time of striking the mine."
& As has been previously explained in this House, the Admiralty have followed their usual course of not publishing court of enquiry proceedings, but the statements issued giving the cause of the disaster as Prix a moored mine are the considered view 45 of the Admiralty based on all the evi- dence. It is absolutely untrue' that the 180 Admiralty have held back important 70 papers that would throw a new light upon. this disaster, and I may add that the allegation that spies had on a former occasion been found in the Hampshire and shot is a ridiculous and wicked fabrication.
