THE "LANGUAGE BARRIER " IN JAPAN. BRITISH ASSOCIATION'S EFFORTS TO SURMOUNT IT.
The following extract is made from a speech delivered at. Yokohama recently by Mr. H. W. Kent, Chairman of the Tokyo and Yokohama branch of the, British Association of Japan:
The language barrier always has been a great obstacle in the way of inter- national understanding, and it is the. further opinion of the Committee that. much could be done to bring about a better understanding between Britishers and the Japanese, if a greater number of men and women bad knowledge of the Japanese language. For this reason, the Japanese Language examinations, which have always been held semi-annually by the Association both in Yokohama and in Kobe have been extended this year to the nationals of the United States of America and all European countries, and all foreign frms concerned have been informed of this facility.

In addition to this, the Association is tions to the women as well as men, and a special vocabulary of social and house. hold words is being prepared upon which to base the ladies' examinations, in addi tion to the business man's vocabulary which has been in use for some time.
