LOCAL RACING NOTES.

BRIGHT PROSPECTS FOR ANNUAL MEETING.

NEED OF MORE OWNERS.

{UT 'ARGUS.]

Much sympathy has been expressed for mare, Victoria, had to be destroyed last Messrs. Toeg and Priestley, whose valuable month. Sportsmen were looking forward. to a great race between this mare, Champions. Prince Regent, and Local Option for thé.

With the entrica closing for the H.K.J.C. annual race-meeting on January 23rd, it is timely to enquire with regard to the numbers of candidates available.

Among the "Old" ponies now in train- ing are Local Option, Grey Morn, Loch However, as matters stand, opposition Rannoch, Rothesay, Blotting Paper, Greyto Lacal Option must be sought else. Knight, Grey Streak, Saligia, Chicago, where. At the moment, Saligia, Grey Uncle Chick, Baldorney Star, Saracen, Horn and King of Hearts, among the Gypsy Love, Beauty Dahlis, Gymp, old brigade, are all that remain. Dictator Dahlia, Mystic Dahlia, King of Hearta, Kagoshima, King of the Plains, Persian Parrot, Arabian Parrot, The Regent, September, Wimmers,

We heard. the same story last year, but in the last analysis found that Local Option, with all in his favour, could d no better than equal the time" of To these may possibly be added Uncle Invincible King pony that was lame Gusengel, Demon Boy, The Critic and the night before the race, and was only Prince Regent, though the last three areatarted as a sort of forlorn hope to give still in veterinary hands.

those, who had backed him, a run for their money.

Rivergrass, Valiant Dahlia, Magnificent Dablis, and Hailsham will have to be reckoned with as probables for the United Services Cup, conditions for which

now are:

lbs.

Conditions.-A Cup will be presented to the Winner with $400 added. Second $250, Third $130. For China Ponies the bond fide property of, and to be ridden by, Officers of HM.'s Regular Forces. "Polo Ponies" leased by Officers will, for the purpose of This Race, be con- sidered as the bona fide property of such Officers. Catch Weights at 160

Entrance fee $8. Once Round (about 7 furlongs end. 55 yards). As this race should attract a number of "leased polo ponies," I expect that at least 10 entries will be received.

In round numbers, therefore, 37 "Old ponies should figure on the card.

Out of the 44 subscription griffins, 4 are expected to be entered. In fact, 1 understand, King's Ransom is the only certain absentec.

Aunty Eva, a grey mare, 13.1, drawn by H. H. Tayler & Co. will be put up to auction on Monday next.

As will be seen from the list below there are 31 Derby griffins, so that the total entries should reach over 100. Last year there were 13 Derby griffins and 92 subscription griffins. Of the former just over 50 per cent. started, while of the latter about 30 per cent carried silk

The average this year is certain to be much higher, so that the prospects are indeed bright.

Of course, the Derby grins are re ported to shelter one or two that can be depended upon to shatter previous records,

Speaking on the steel trade outlook at the annual meeting of the Cargo: Fleet Iron Co. at Middlesbrough, Viscount Furness pointed out that local rates had increased 214 per cent, representing T nearly 8s. per ton on steel costa. "OP United Asbestos timism without regard to the facts is mis leading," he said, and a review of all the circumstances of the trade as they exist to-day can only lead to the con clusion that steel cannot continue to be sold at present prices, without serions losses being incurred. The problem of the cost of production at sufficiently low prices to enable us to export in face of foreign competition, added Lord Furness; still remained unsolved, and he held that hours of work in the coal, iron, and steel trades would have to be revised.
