Of the cargo untered for Hongkong for the first period referred to, 1,435 tons were brought by two British vessels. The best entry 1,568 tons was also by a 'British vessel, the 28. Talma, from Kobe and Amoy. Deck passengers carried totalled 2,783, of which number the 5.5. Talma carried 5,000.
The arrivals for the 21 hours onded at. a.m. yesterday were as under.The 8.8. City of Stockholm (British) from Dairen and Shanghai with a mi entry:" the sta. Soochow (British) from Tsingtao and Shanghai with 150 tons of grzeral cargo and mail; the sa. Talmu (British) from Kebe and Amoy with 1,238 tons of general cargo and mail; the s.a. Amboing (French) from Yokohama and Shanghai with 7 tons of general cargo and mail; the ss. Borneo Marit (Japanese) from Yokohama and Moji with 993 tons of dangerous goods and the s.s. Later arrivals yesterday, too late for entry in the above returns, included the 2.3. Van Clonn (Dutch) from Amoy and the RMS Empress of Bussin from Manila with general cargo and 'mail;
SHIPPING NOTES.
The R.M.S. Empress of Russia return- cd from Manila yesterday morning and went to her wharf at Kowloon to dis charge her passengers and cargo prior to, going to Dock for the nonuni overhaul and repairs.

A report in the Harbour Office Yester- day from the master of the as, Soochem (British) from Tsingtao and Shanghai, stated that the vessel passed a medium sized junk, bottom up and awach, in S. 64 E. magortie 8, while en, zoute for Hongkong.
A Chinese stowaway was discovered on the sa Haining when she was about to to sail on Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock. Ho was handed over to the police, but a Chinese Erst class passenger made himself responsible for the man's faro to Amoy

WHEN SCOT MEETS SCOT. A SPIRITED CONTROVERSY. A spirita ccatorergy between the Duke of Argyll and the Rey, J. Scanlar Thomson, minister of Inverchaolain, Argyth is revealed in letters which have. been sept to the Press. The origin of the correspondenes was a discussion at Dunoon Presbytres regarding a missing fant frem Cairndow Church, which way reported, to be in the Episcopal Charch of Inveraray. The Unks of Argyll wrote to the Press denying this story, and said the font had been found lying in his shrubbery, and bad belonged to the old parish church of Kilmalow, Invernray, The minister of Inverchaplain, who had been mentioned, in that communication, replied. In the course, of a letter to the Rev. Mr. Thomson, the Duke states:
On my return from Fanes I found that in my absence you had found time from your normal ministerial functiona to busy yourself and to meddle not only in the supposed affairs of the pariah of Kinlochgoil. Lochgailhead, but even in that of Kilmallow, which Intter parish does not even lie jo the presbytery whose meetings you enriched with your eloquence.",
The Duke takes the minister to task for a reference to an episcopal missionary ty the aborigines of Inverary," which showed, he declared, that curioua ill- breeding of which the old type of High- land minister would never have been guilty, The Duks concludes:

The Rev. Mr. Thomson dated his letter of reply: On or about the anniversary of the Lamont murders" (a reference to a notorious massacre of over 100 Lamonts by members of the Clan Camp- bell, of which the Duke is hereditary chief), Mr. Thomson says: "Long and silently have I waited for the imposition of penances befitting my misdemeanours, and I must now presume that you? Grace, following illustrious family pre cedent, has postponed valour to dis cretion. At this point let me яay that hereafter I shall, for conveni- erce, presume to address your Grace ns n ordinary being, then which, no higher complintent could be offere
ayne. Further on in his letter the minister states: "There are other points which I must pass. It were a sorrowful task to explain these to one to whom Prezidence has not granted a humorous mind. It may be enough to say regret. fully that I do not feel tempted, to take your Grace as a mentor, either in com- position or in manners."
