REVIEW OF TRADE FOR 1925.
EFFECTS OF THE BOYCOTT.
AWAITING A FAVOURABLE TURN OF EVENTS.
In accordance with our annual custom we publish the following notes on local trade during the year:-
PIECE GOODS.
In reviewing the past year's working of the Piece Goods trade of Hongkong a dismal picture must be drawn of what has been the most unsatisfactory period for many years. The year opened with a healthy feeling all round, giving justi- fcation to a hope that a steady trade would be forthcoming after the China New Year Settlement. The festival came and weat and in the interim, before the Colony was laced with the general strike, de generating into a boycott of British goods
in Canton, only a desultory interest was evinced by dealers in any class of Piece Goods. From June onwards, business has been practically at a standstill, deniers being afraid to commit themselves, pend- ing favourable turn of events in Canton, Deliveries were poor, owing to the block ade of Canton, and much seasonable cargo will be carried over into 1920. To fore cast prospects for the coming year is an impossibility, everything depending upon the political situation is, and around
Canton.
METALS.
Business during the early part of the year was disappointing. The stocks of most lines, appeared to be sufficient for trade purposes in the first three months, and dealers were reluctant to pay the equivalent of prices asked for by import ers. The amount of business hooked after the Chinese New Year festival was well helow the average, and this subsequently proved to be the salvation of the market. Since the strike and boycott, the move- ment of stocks to the consuming districts has been practically nil, and demand for new supplies unimportant. The year 1625 can only be described as one of the worst on record from the view paints of both importers and dealers.

siderably. Prices in many directions have been well below cost of production, and it is therefore unlikely that a generally intensive cultivation campaign can' con- tinue indefinitely. It appears at present to be a fight for supremacy between the Beet and the Cane growers, and if so, it is certainly not profitable to either at present low market values. It may be assumed that unless production continues to increase at the same rate "as of late, prices of sugar will be maintained; if not improved, after the weight of output reaches its pinnacle next year.
Another bumper crop of about 5 million tons is expected from Cuba 1825/26, but otherwise no increase of any importance is expected in the sum total of the world's It was expected output for next year. that Cuba would show a carry over of about one million tons syrplus at the end of the present year, but this estimate, owing to good demand, haa' now been reduced to about million tons. In 1991 over one million tons were carried over by Cuba, but were soon absorbed by the better demand that set in owing to low
prices.

Shanghai flour was a keen competitor early in the year but with the trouble in North China supplies were unchtainable in the South.
Australian four bas given satisfaction throughout the year but with the limited space available for flour on the vessels trading with China the imports have not been as heavy as the Millers in Australia desired.
There is no doubt that provided there is a settlement in the political affairs and the strike against Hongkong at Canton we may see larger imports of
four in 1926.
