For four hours the storm raged with great severity, and all the navigating skill and experience of Captain Berni: were required to bring his ship safely through it. At the end of that period the seus moderated somewhat, but rough weather was experienced for thirty-six
hours.
When a Steile Times representative went on board the G. G. Roume, lying outside the breakwater, evidence of the impact of the wave was not hard to find. Thirty feet of the deck railings had been carried clean away, the plategiass of a eabin skylight was smashed, and a strong wooden door leading to the second class cabins in the stern was off its hinges.
That the height of the wave had not been exaggerated was shown by the damage it wrought on the boat-deck, where the awnings were cut down ag though by, a knife. The water ooded the officers' cabines, on this deck, washing the chief officer out of his hunk, and the officer on watch on the bridge above was momentarily immersed by the wave.
Captain Berni, who only came out to the East five months ago, said that thia was the most violent storm-he had en- countered during thirty years at sea, and the four hours during which it lasted were a very anxious time.
The missing passengers are believed to comprise three Malays, a Chinese and an Indian. *.
The G. G. Roume is owned by the Societé des Affréteurs Indo-Chinois. The damage will be repaired at Saigon.

Man and woman have now become equal, and as Euclid says, when two things are equal to one another they are equal to anything.-Lord Darling.

Pleading guilty to a charge brought against him ag the result or a large quantity of non-Government chand (opium) being found on his vessel, Captain John McKellar, of the steamer Hung Peng, was fined 8500 by the Dis trict Judge at Singapore last week,
Captain McKellar explained that the cabin in which the drug was found was occupied by three female, passengers in They had the key of the cabin.
Mr. Taylor, head of the Preventive Service, old His Honour that the case was in nature almost similar to the seizure on the Seang. Bée recently. A search party headed by Mr. Listerman boarded the vessel on her arrival from Amoy, and discovered nearly $40,000 worth of non-Government chandu. bidden behind the panelling of one of the cabins. The quantity found" was about 5,400
tabils
Mr. Taylor remarked that under the Ordinance concerned the onus was on the Captain to prove that he had no know. ledge of the opium being where it was. I know it is difficult to do so, he added, "but if the passengers bad pat the chandu there one would naturally expect them to take it away, not leave it behind the pacelling. Wo do not suggest that the Captain had anything to do with it personally, but he is res! ponsible."
Mr. David: I do not think I can make it a ucminal penalty..
Mr. Taylor: There have already been: two convictions against this vessel. Al- thost all thee vessels from China have been convicted several times..
The fine as above stated was inflicted.
