CZECHO-SLOVAKIA'S BIRTHDAY.
-SEVEN YEARS' PROGRESS. The Republic of Czecho Slovakia has just celebrated the seventh anniversary. of its creation as a sovereign State.
The progress o the State is extra ordinary writes the Prague correspon- dent of a London paper when one con- siders the short space of time in which it has been accomplished. But there are quite excellent reasons for this rapid progress It in doubtful whether any other country in Europe has spent so much time, trouble, and money on pro- puganda as Czecho-Slovakia. Although using a difficult language, which is of to practical use to say modern business man, it has managed to make itsel known from Paris to Tokyo. French, English, and even German, have been pressed into service. The Czech Govern- ment issues weekly, three separate newS- papers written in these three languages. As a matter of fact, the German paper is daily. Every facility is given to the foreign journalist visiting this coun try for the first time; he is shown every- thing, told everything. Artistic, scien tile, and musical organisations abroad have been encouraged to hold their con ferences in Prague. Government hos- pitality has fuduced them to accept those offers. During the past seven years some dozens of conferences of various kinds must have been held this country.
For the outside world Czecho-Slovakia, The Lewis Gun Range will be at dis has produced four outstanding per- posal of O's. C. in reserve order to above.sonalities during its short 'existence:

President Masaryk, Dr. Edward Benes, Dr. Alois Rasin, and Karel Chapek. When history is written it is certain tha President Masaryk will be one of the most significant figures of the period He worked the whole of his life for one purpose, the liberation of his people from à foreign yoke. That purpose has been nchieved and the spiritual history of the creation of this Republic is the his tory of President Masaryk. Dr. Edward Benes, the Czech Foreign Minister, is a very spectacular statesman and has proved himself an able showman for his country. Dr. Alois Rusin, who is better known in Central Europe than in the Anglo-Saxon wid, was the Czech Fin- ance Minister responsible for the separa tion of the Czech currency from that of All Sections parade at Corps Head-old Austria. VALUE OF RESEARCH. COTTON INVESTIGATION.
Sir Thomas Holland, Rector of the Imperial College of Science and Tech- nology, addressing the Royal Society of Arte, urged the placing of scientific research, upon a national and Imperial basis. He called attention to the fact that the Cotton Research Association was spending £15,000 a year on research- in connection with a raw product that was worth between £30,000,000 und £60,000,000. Thus, & farthing added to every 206. represented the cost of valuable investigation.
