ENGLISH SAILORS IN RÚSSIAN PORT:
CAPTAIN'S AMUSING ACCOUNT OF THE RECEPTION. ENTERTAINED BY COMMUNISTS: Lloyd's List and Shipping Gazette publishes letter from the master of a British steamer which has recently visit ed, a South Russian port. The writer says:—
&
The Azolf Sen has but recently been opened up for the grain trade, and, as may be expected, r from smooth work- ing conditions are at present the case. As a master of the ship, had to take up quarters an ̈shore, as is the custom in moet Aroff ports, where the ship lies anywhere from ten to twenty miles off shore. Personally I found the inhabit- ants amiable and full of attention to my welfare, but domestic life in many cases insufferable under the code of equality.
The local council requested me through the interpreter (only two could speak. English it the place) to allow as many of the crew as convenient to accept u a welcome in the form of a banquet and The invitation amusements to follow, sccrued so genuiae that 1 readily agreed, and made the necessary arrangements for such of the crew as could be spared to uppeur. The object was soon plain. THE CAPTAIN'S INQUISITION. After showing me round a sort of rest. house for senmann of their own ships when on annual fortnight's leave, I had to face an inquisition for fully an hour while waiting for the rest of the crew to arrive I take it that I was regarded as a bourgeois, for my opinions on capita- lism, Imperialism, and such like, were the subject of much dissent among them, and they countered with expositions of the wonderful results achieved by Com. munism. To show how they are grossly misled, the majority were under the im- pression that Britain to-day was ruled by Commucists, but I assured them that, though we had such, they were decidedly un popular.
However, with great relief, I heard the straits of a band approaching obvious ly the guests being welcomed. When they entered I confess they looked anything but happy to see a motley crowd around the tables passing rriticism, and although I really believe the Russians wished ta give our fellows a good time, they hadn't suficient tact to feed them fret and talk. afterwards, but immediately settled down to the speeches.
First one notable comrade, then an other, thundered at us of the evils of capitalisto, the need for crushing organi. sed society remorselessly, the theory that the world should belong to the workers only, and that the only way to attain it. was with fire and the sword to all who opposed, as they had done. One military gentleman declared that Russia, the only country who bad disarmed, was obliged to take up arms again because of the militarist designs upon her by England, America, and France, who only waited favourable opportunity to pounce on her and throw the whole world in turmo again as they did before, in order to put millions into the pockets of the arma
