IN AN INDIAN ARMY HOSPITAL. DEVOTED ORDERLIES.

The chief and most important person in Indian Army. Hospital is the Orderly. The orderlies, like all the sens, of men, are clever and wicked or stupid and goal, and the perfect orderly is born once in a way, like Leonardo da Vinci But other men of outstanding genius. Wa were fortunate in having oar strch shining light at Kannu when there was a big influenza epidemia. We "logged" Mahomed . influenza, but Wazir

slogged" more than all of us. I have been in a ward with forty influenza cases, all more or less touched with pneumonia, the sister over mo.ill herself, and only Wazir Mahomed to help. He was tire- less; cases used to come in eight or ten at a time; he would handle them all, while I was taking temperatures and perparing feeds at the other end of the ward. Our hospital, what with slogging," a medical officer who be. liever in the open air cure, and Wazir Mahomed, had the smallest death-rate of all the station hospitals. But alas

victim to his Wazir Mahomed fell a devotion to duty, and died of pneumonia the influenza epidemic was leaving Banny.

For a time we were inclined to look ou all orderlies with a lenient eye for the sake of Wazir Mahomed, but we soon learned that soft words are wasted on orderlies. I had a Gharwali« orderly speech and admonishing left him un tonched--hard words broke no bones. I eaned him weekly-some times daily. Ho answered to caning, like a walnut tree When I left Bannu he came to say good- bye, smiling.

"Sister Sahib," he said solemnly, "your eanings have made me what I am." So puffing out his chest he saluted Land departed,

Hillmen made passable orderlica wher duly chastened. We had a huge Bhut ansea man too big to beat-who could work for ten in his wild way, and was willing to learn, but he refused to obey Anyone under a sister, and the hospital stall and patients were afraid of him. I think Bhutanese in the Inian Army have the same prestige as Warlock Finns among mariners. Our big Bhutanese "did just as bo liked, until we prevented it.

TROUBLE WITH A PATHAN

Pathan orderlies were quarrelsome and disobedient, but brave and resourceful, and very useful when there was an up- rour among the patients, or in the hos pital quarters. One day there was an unholy din in our mess kitchen. One cook, who he proclaimed it himself- never drank whisky but only gin,, was provoked by his favourite tipple to de- siring the life of the bottle-washer. The bottle washer few to the home sister, the home sister flow to Matron who was with me in the fever ward, and the cook paced outside the duty-room. coming," said Matron, who was of the blood of Irish Kings. π

"I too will come," said the fever-ward orderly, who was "of the blood of old Darani lords.

"I'd better go too," I murmured, be ing trained in loyalty and obedience.

We made a bee line for the duty-room- The cook retreated. We thought it was defeat and the bottle washer pranced. But the chef had only retired for am- munition. We saw him seize a huge kitchen knife. In an istant the orderly slammed the door and put me against it. "Sit there with all your weight, Sister Sahib," he said, and seven stone sat like a stone, while Matron, with all the authority of Irish Kings, commanded the cook to lay down his arms.

The reply was a rattling at the win- dow, a ferocious head and a gleaming knife appeared. The bottle-washer yelled, the orderly sprang forward, seized the knife by the blade, wrenched it out, of the chef's hand. and then laid firm hold of the savage head. In an instant it was over- guard removed the cook, trembling bottle washer returned to duty. and a calm Pathan orderly returned to his post of wilful disobedience.

THE UNRULY ORDERLY Orderlies always disregarded prohibi tion. Enteric and other patients could always-obtain forbidden food from orderlies I shall never forget the senat when a ward sister discovered a little. Gurkha orderly feeding an enteric" strikan Gurkha with curried potatoes. It was alapdashi bang and red and Jurid language; the assaulted little Gurkha begged for merey; he said he had no idea he was doing wrong; while the terrified patient hid himgil unter the bed-clothes till only the trembling top of his red head-bandkerchief was visible. There was an inquiry into this matter, but the little Gurkha learned his little job. We were not supposed to

'Four Sandy Macs please '

For many years had the Four Cronies of the Exclusivé Club led the fashion in drinks, calling for their **Scotchs" and "Scotchs and Sodas."

D

Insomuch that when a Tall Tanned Stranger called for a "Sandy Mac," whiskers wagged, papers rustled, and eyebrows rose among the Four..

Until they marked the way he drank. And observed- the deference of George who served it.

Thereafter they whispered with George. Then amongst themselves. Later the senior Cronya Purple Colonel-- called in a clear voice "Four Sahdy Macs, please." So men learn.
