***COLUMBUS DAY."-

ITALY'S NEW HOLIDAY.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20TH, 1925

For the Irst time, on October 12th in Rome and throughout Italy, by order of Signor Mussolini and the National Gov-| crament, "Columbus Day was celebrat ed as a national holiday. It is strange,. but true, that it took more than 400 years for Christopher. Columbus to obtain the generous recognition due to him from his own countrymen, and for the dato! of the discovery of America to bi com- memorated with national honours in Italy as well as in America. The re- ovocation of one of the greatest national glorica of Italy is dua to the enlightened policy of the Fascist Govèrnment, which some months ago issued a proclamation, signed by Signor Mussolini, that here after October 12th, the date of the dis covery of America by the Genoese navi gator, was to be celebrated as a national holiday, '-

The national fling was hoisted on all public buildings and on some private Loused. The general public, wrote a Rome correspondent, has not yet learned the significance of the event, which partly accounts for the fact that general decoration and the usual signs of n boliday are still somewhat missing, but, in time, national appreciation will doubtless increase, which is the thing intended by the Fascist Government. In Rome a commemorative ceremony was held in the Borronini Hall, in the pro sence of the Minister of Public Instruc tion, of all the city authorities, and the representatives of all the American Re- publics, and an address was delivered by Professor Manfroni.

At Anzio the day was commemorated new and first by the opening of the transatlantic cable, connecting Italy directly with. Rio de Janeiro. Buenos Aires, and the South American Con- tinent. The ceremony was presided over by Signer Massolini, with the Ministers

Ciano, Scales, Federtoni, Fedele, Rocco, Giuriati, and Volpi, and the Ambas sadors and Ministers of Brazil, Argen tina, Uruguay, Chili, Peru, the United States; and Spain. The length of the cable, laid by an Italian cable company, is 18,000 kilometres, and the laying, which was begun in 1924, was to be

finished only in 1997. Instead, the work

was carried out so rapidly that the cable had been already laid, and suitable tor- minal station buildings erected në Anzio, to make the inauguration possible to-day, thus connreting it with the Columbus: celebration.
