WHAT FILMS COULD DO FOR BRITAIN.
[Br J. D. Wiz One of the leading figurer in the film industry in America] Eleven years of my business life were spent in Canada and Australia, and no one realises more than I that Great Britain needs British motion pictures as much as America needs American one

In the remote regions of Africa, South America, the Far and Near Last, and the frozen North, millions American motor- who never wan car, au American borne or any of our everyday necessities, "are familiar with these things through the medium of the silent drama.
They do not know our language, but our ways and mode of life are con- them. That is why stantly before pictures made in the United States are the greatest trade missionaries, creating good will for American goods and laying the groundwork for in- erenses in industrial exports.
As an international salesman, motion pictures rank as America's greatest. People in far-off lands enjoy American motion Convenience because our pictures were the catalogues that sold them. They saw our products on the screen, visualised them in the atmos phere of their own communities, and importers were quick to meet the demand. Many American exporters look upon motion pictures as their most efficient trade envoys.
Substitute Britain and “British "*" for Amerion" and "American" and you will realise what the motion picture i hould mean le the British Empire's trade.
POOR ORGANISATION!
Every business man in the world knows that Creat Britain is more dependent than America on her export and import trade, and it should be obvious that motion pictures are even more essential to her welfare..
Some eighteen months ago I attended a luncheon of the British film trade in London and there heard wonderful spreches on the subject by the Prince of Wales, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald (then, Prime Minister); Lord Burnham, and others. 11 only 10 per celt, of what they then saju sere tree, items strange to me that the industrial leaders of this
not yet awakened country have the vital necessity of this fascinating business which is doing so much for the enlightenment, entertainment, and pro- gress of mankind.

All over the world the mark Made in England is regarded as a sign of quality that is supreme in many things. Few Americans of standing think of having aaything but English cloth for their clothes. Sheffield cutlery is the standard of excellrace, as the British car is the high-water mark of quality the world-
over.
Unfortunately for Britain, this has not been the case with her motion pictures. It is not because you have not the material or the men; not because the frequently blamed climate is a handicap, not because for indeed, it is not; you have not the actors or the stories/ It is almost entirely beanse no one has for lempted to organine what
is, perkant, the most techuical business in the world on a sound and sufficiently large and stable basis.
cent, of "It is a fact that about 90 per American-made fims are produced under artificial light Consquently climatic conditions no longer affect production.
GOOD PICTURES WANTED. There are many British actors, direc tors, seruarib writers, technical experts camera mix, and others at present work- ing in America who could be induced to come back bome if proper and per manent facilities existed here for the making British motion pictures. And there are many others right here now who only need the opportunity to deve lop into as capable workers as these

The motion picture does not belong to Boy one nation. The French and Italians were the first to show us how to make motion picturea, I think the first really big picture success in America an Italian picture "Quo Vadis 1 "Du Barry," renamed" Passion," which was an enormous success in America, Was a German-made picture of a French story. But up to the present time there has been no outstanding British picture. (Continued on next Column).

The American public, despite rumours to the contrary, are always looking for good pictures from any country. There ara 18,000 exhibitors of films in the Caited States, the majority of whors would be glad to show really Erst-rate British pictures. When such pictures are made here they will be just as success- ful in America as those made in Holly- wood.

When the right British leader appears with an instinct and a passion for do ing big things in a big way, he will certainly have the co-operation of every- one interested in this problem-the Gav- ernment, the newspapers, the great in- dustries, and the struggling motion picture industry itself. It is a big job. which needs a man of vision-the sort of commercial vision which made it possible to establish The Daily Mail, and build the greatest newspaper business in the warld; the type of national vision, by which Mr. Lloyd George Jed Great Britain to victory in the greatest war in history...
