MERCHANT VOLUNTEERS. Beports from Peking state that the Associated Chambers of Commerce at a recent meeting resolved to recommend the Canton system of merchant volunteers to all merchants in China as a practical means of checking, militariem.

CANTON KOWLOON RAILWAY.

At the Marine Court on Saturday. before Lt.-Cdr. G. F. Hole, R.N., Mr. A. . Frame, master of the a.s. Changsha, was charged on two counts: (a) that being master of the ss. LAND TAXES.

Mr. J. T. Prior, who defended, said that the cargo, several bags of peas, were the personal property of passengers.

Li Chap and Tsoi Pak, masters of trading junks; and Kang Fuk, master of a boat, were charged with failing to exhibit regulation lights on theif craft while under way.

The first and second defendant were each fined $15, with two weeks' hard labour in default; while the third de fendant was fined $5, with five days' hard labour in default.
