DRAWING THE DOLE... Ex-seamen living in the neighbourhood are often prepared for a touch of adven ture and act as links in the smuggling chain. One man who is believed to be concerned in the traffic is otherwise unemployed and draws the dole.

On the request of several organisation

of journaliste, the International Labour Once has circulated to a number of organisations of professional journalists tionnaire covering their conditions of in a large number of countries a ques employment. The main points to which attention is drawn are the legal status of the members, the labour market, con- tracts of service, conditions of employ- ment, remuneration, provident instit tions, organisation, and the general posi tion of the profession. Journalistic in- stitutions of over 20 countries have been approached in this matter, and a number of detailed and carefully prepared replies bare already been received. In particu lar the reply of the Syndicate des Jour- nalists of France should be mentioned, which, in a document of 43 pages, given very interesting and complete replies to the points raised.

While it is at present too early to give a full account of the results of this en- quiry, which will be printed in due couran by the International Lahour Office, it is safe to say that the replies that have been received to date indicate that in a large number of countries the profession of journalism is, in view of the journalists' associations, insufficiently remunerated and protected.
