ELEPHANT SHOOTING.

ELIMINATING · THE : ROGUE.

For the very may men in India who are keen on shikar the announcement in a Provincial Gosette that a rogue elephant in a certain" district has out- lived his time and that his immediate elimination is matter of extremos desirability is a point of merely heademic interest. Unless the sportsman happens o be within reasonable distance of the scene of action, there are far too many difficulties to be overcome. The man with unlimited time and money at his disposal is of course, in a position to chake rogues until he is tired of it, or until he comes to an unpleasant end through the instrumentality of an enraged hathi. But to the ordinary person the undertaking of a long trip with the object of shooting a proclaimeil rogue is a too uncertain affair to prove a great attraction, Accordingly the average man limits his ambitions to more accessible game. At the same time, ho certainly misses a lot in the.. way of shikar. thrills In many- possibly most cases shooting an ele phant, when it is all over, is actually shout os dangerous as shooting dhobi's donkey. On the other hand, if there is any trouble it is likely to be of the most lively king. There are fortunate "individuals who have shot se

tiger that a charge is a very ordinary part of the day's work. Bat the excitement that a charging elephant can provide is calculated "to satisfy the most hlase of sportsmen in this country:

NERVY WORK.

However experieneed a man may be in pursuit of other game, he will find the rocess of working. up to his first elephant a decidedly nervy business. In the most unlikely event of his fading" the beast in the open, he can, if he likes, try long range shots at a hundred yards or so. It he does it is a thousand to ono against his doing more than either scaring bie quarry out of the neighbour- hood or provoking a charge which he will be lucky if ho survives with nothing more than a bad fright. What will far more probably be the case is that the elephant will be in the jungle, and the sportsmari will have to get up to him. In ordinary circumstapers it is not diffenit. There are unpleasant animals which charge on sight anything on two legs and seen to spend all their time looking for an opportunity of mak- ing trouble of this nature. But they are the exceptions. Generally speaking is is easy enough to get a fair chance; the difficulty lies in turning that chance to the best account. In normal cir cumstances the elephant is an unmapici- ous beast. The enly enemy has to fear is a high velocity rifle in the hands of raan, and as meeting with that enemy is not a matter of everyday. occurrence, it is not as a rule on the alert as is the case with others animals. Its eyesight is not purticularly | Sre good, though it is better than is gen erally understood. The noise it makes when feeding or moving through jungle' help to render its arufe powers of hear. ing less protective than they otherwise would be and enables it to be approach- ed with comparative ease. The sense of smell is good, and it is this which the sportsman has to watch most carefully. But once an elephant is wounded or seri ously alarmed its faculties begin to work overlime and getting up to it is a very different matter. Either it will clear out at a pace which gives the sportsman little hope of coming up with it again, or it will stay and fight the matter out.

-THE FIRST SHOT.

+

It is essential, therefore, that the first shot must be properly placed. This is not easy. With the Indian elephant the hend shot is invariably taken, and it comparison with the bulk of the animal the size of the brain is minute. An elephant standing broadside on presents an area of some seventy or eighty square feet. Out of that the bullet has to be placed somewhere in a target of per- haps a dozen square inches. It is easy to understand, therefore, how difficult it is for anyone to gauge the spot at which to sim, the more so when, as is prob ably the case, excitement is making the foresight trade patterns comparable with the markings on the temperature chart of an enteric patient. Any reasonably large calibre cordite rifle will send solid bullet far enough into an elephant's, head to reach the brain from any angle. But unless the shot is judged to a nicety, there is more than a possibility of, its course being diverted by the teeth or one of the massiva bones. Moreover, the brain is anywhere, but where one would expect it to be. As a matter of fact, a skewer passed into ono ear and but-of the other will just about transfix the brain, and that is a point which the sportsman has to keep firmly in mind. and judge the angle of his shot necord- ingly. In doing so, however, he must not forget the relativs positions of the upper teeth-the tasks do not come into
