The primary aim of science, as we understand it, is to explore the nets of Nature, to ascertain their mutual res Intions, and to arrange them as far as possible into a consistent and intelligible Professor Horace scheme." declared Lamb, president of the British Associa tion, delivering the inaugural speech a the annual meeting of that body at Southampton.

NEED FOR PATIENCE. The chief poing to remember about water-waving is that it is necessarily a slow proces" and requires abundant patience and perseverance.
It is pos sible to train” the hair to become wavy in time, and the results are well worth the trouble and time expended on
Many women have come to me an asked what they could do to their hair, having tried water-waving without sue A few questions soon elicited the fact that they had been scou discour aged and did not carry on with the treatment. My own hair was quite straight some STRTs ago, and as ad iron wave did not suit me I set to work to remedy this defect by water- waving. The results of a "natural

Many hairdressers will water-wave the hair if requested to do so, but it is u simply task which can be undertaken at home. After shampooing the hair rub the head vigorously for at least five minutes to get as much moisture out as possible. Then carefully comb the hair, trake the usual parting; coax the hair into waves and keep them in place with the aid of small combs and bairpins. From these reflections, the speaker turn ed to one of his own siccial brunches of study, geophysics and he dealt. among other things, with the question of the age of the earth-or, at any rate, with the period that has elapsed since the earth's crust solidified.
Old ideas of the age of the earth, based on the rate at which the planet would cool down, bad heen modified in the light of our knowledge, of radio-activity. Estimates based on the occurrence of radio-active material had led to the con- clusion that a period not shorter than |1,000,000,000 years, and not longer than 10,000,000,000 years, had elapsed since the Baal solidifying of the earth's crust.
Even the shorter period, the speaker commented, gave ample scope for what he described as the "draina of evolution."
INSIDE THE EARTH. · · Professor Lamb went on to discuss, the |fascinating problem of the earth's interior. An immense period of time, he indicated, would be necessary for the earth's core to fall to one-half of its original tempera- ture. In the space of time I have men. tioned," he said, "the great mass of the earth would hardly have cooled, very much from the temperature when it was in a state of fusion," L., molten.
So the hearer was left with the im- pression of a red-hot, molten mass in the earth's interior, a mas which even thonsand million years have not sufficed to cool

In the professor's words, the exterior of the earth "might be floating on na internal globe of liquid "—but he, hasten- ed, with true scientific caution, to add that "no.assertion is really made, or is. necessary, to this effect'

THE PRINCE ON RANCHING.
ADVICE TO BOYS WHO WANT TO
GO TO. CANADA.
A letter from the Prinen of Wales re- ganding the employment
British young men on his ranch in Canada was.read by Dr. Ernest Barker, of King's College, London, at the Education Section of the British Association at Southampton on August 31st..
At last year's meeting in Turonte Dr. the Prince should employ on his mach Barker made a private suggestion that boys trained in England for fire The letter, received from the Prince's secretary stated:
over-seas
The Prince discussed last year with Mr. Carlyle, the manager of his ranch, and Sir Walter Peacock, the secretary of the Duchy of Cornwall, the question which you" raise.
At the present time there is no accom modation for boys on the ranch, nor is there sufficient work for more than three or four, but his Royal Highness approved of two or three extra rooms being provided in the proposed new bunk house when it is buil. This would probably be next year.
Mr. Carlyle considers that 20 is the' best age for young men to po to Canad 1, cxcept for hoys who go at a much earlier age to a eclony farm. He thinks that after leaving a public school boys should go and learn on an English pedi- gree stock farin for a year before pru ceeding to Canada. They will then dis cover for themselves whether they are suited to a farmer's life and, they will also know something about stock. So many young men who go out to Canada drift into the towns and eventually. return to England,
I am sure Mr, Carlyle's views on the master are very"sound."
