THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS. MONDAY

FILMS IN THE FAR EAST, HOW THE CINEMA COULD HELP BRITISH PRESTIGE.

In connection with a sermon preached on Sunday, August 2nd, in St. John's Cathedral by the Rev. T. B. Powell, in the course of which the preacher made reference to 'undesirable cinematograph films which were sometimes shown in China and elsewhere in the Far East, the following article from the pen of Agraraine, the well-known writer, on film subjects, in the Referee will be at interest:-

We have been hearing a great deal lately of the weakening of British prestige in the Far East through our official failure to understand the world-wide in portance of the cinema. Both from the diary to which I referred last week, and from other information that has come to hand, it would appear that the state of affairs in this regard is more deplorable than could well be imagined.

So far as China is concerned, here is a little sidelight of my diarist friend's upon what is happening.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAM. WHAT CANDIDATES WERE ASKED

AT RECENT TEST.

The Civil Service correspondent of the Daily Telegraph writes:-

As I anticipatell the General Paper set to the 92,000 ex-Service candidates from the Civil Service proved the most difficult part of the examination for which they are witting. The examiners' testa, which included, questions on the grigin of the war, wireless telegraphy, and Imperial Preference, certainly fulfilled the promise that they would be of interest and im- portance at the present day."

It would be interesting to learn how Civil Servants nad others not sitting for the examination would have fared when faced with the following light interroga. tories

1. Give in brond outline the course of events which led up to the war of 1914- 1918

41

2. Illustrate the effect of climate on the habits and industries of men.

What are the arguments which can advanced for and against the practice of vaccination!

4. Explain with the aid of diagrams the working either of a crystal wireless set or

a simple telephone circuit

What may be said for and against lig huainess combinations?

"There are," he writes, " twenty-two cinemas in Korea and sixteen in Man

They appeal only to Koreaus who like Amerif can serials, comedies, and fighting pic- tures. They pay only one yen fifty sen (three shillings) a real for a production, regardless of its quality, so that only Alms ready for the junk-henp are sent here for whatever extra their rental was bring."

Describe, in outline the work done by the State to promote either agricul ture or education,,

Why is Great Britain unwilling to hand over to Egypt the control of the Suez Canal and of the Sudan

attention would be paid to the clearness and orderly arrangeuicnt of the answers.

It is quite evident that the American monopoly in those parts of the world has nothing to do with any desire to repre sent either American or white civilisation' generally in a light favourable to Oriental eyes. To get money, whether for worth- less and pernicious trash or for pirated goods, is the only aim.
