EYE-WITNESSES' EVIDENCE AT

INQUEST.

An inquest.regarding the death of Mi Doris Bowyer-Smith, who was fatally in. jured by a sharke at the Swimming Club on July th, was held-by the Coroner (fr. F. 6. Hourney on July 20th.

Mr. H. B. Sahmond stated that on the evening of Wedinesiiny, July 14th, he went to the Swimming Club with the deceased, the two children of Commander Carter, and Major Coventry. They arrived about 4.46. and five minutes later witness swam out to the diving-stage. The de censed went along the jetty, dived in from there, and swam to the stage. The depth of water at the time was about nine feet, and the water was choppy, so that witness was unable to see beneath the surface.

Lieut. Commander Newill stated that he entered the water and swam out to the diving-stage. When he was about a foot away from the steps he saw on the other side of the stage what appeared to be a shark's head unidat i swirl of water.
