Sia. Many will be found who are in agreement with me that Mr. D. H Cameron, General Manager of the Stand. SIR-Your correspondent Doubter "

ard Oil Company in Hongkong, is to be (your issue July 23rd) raises some inter- congratulated on his expression of opin. esting points for discussion on this sah-ion on the present situation as reported in the interview granted to your repre- ject.

As far as I am able to remember the scutative. Mr. Cameron might be asked argument of your leading article (July to infect Mr. Miserimus Doleful, of 10th), the main ides of the office of High whom there are many, with one of his Commissioner for China was to munka optimism and well-founded confidence in Hongkong, once again, the centre of Hongkong. He made no mistake in gravity of all British interests in China, That was the position eighty years ago and until a British Minister was up-before many months are past.” pointed to Peking it continued.

erting "I am confident that Hang- kong will weather the storm and that business in the Far East will be booming

This is the kind of stuff to give us During the life of the Empress antidotes to the timidity of those who, Dowager it may have been a wise more by their actions, convey to our enemies to have a trained British diplomat at the impression that Hongkong is down Peking s the representative of the and out. Mr. Cameron speaks not as a He is a resident of laug British Government in China although the grifin in China, only appointment that really justified the standing. The products of his corpora tion penetrates to the remotest and even expens was that of Sir John Jordau, Moreover, he would have been much more ordinarily inaccessible places in Chifa. useful if he had known something af His is the reasoned opinion of one who kuows his China and particularly Hong- Hongkong and South China. These gea-kang. He is the type of citizen of whom tlemen in Peking cannot understand that Hongkong might well be proud. With a British trade interests in South Chind few more Camerons Hongkong should do really are important. Even the famous very well—Yours, etc., Fimes correspondent, the late Dr. Morri son, quos told the writer that "nothing South of the Yangtze, nattered to Britain. British diples" and repre- sentatives of London newspapers get a wrong idea of British interests in China for they live in Poking where there is practically no trade..

Let us be quite frank and acknowledge that Great Britain is represented in the Far East because of trade. The reason why the British came to the Far East was to serie trade. The diplomats" in Peking have rather i lofty contempt for trade. It is not at all certain that our local aristocracy, the cadets, are fre from the same outlook. It is the Oxford point of view, and many of our cadets have absorbed it. Even His Excellency the Governor has not altogether shaken himself free from it. The British pioneers who built up far Eastern trade, and these who followed, were doing useful work for their own country and for China.

shall be obliged if you will doj. te the courtesy of printing the following letter with reference to the Public "Meet- ing to be held on Monday (té-day) at

5.30.

It has been arranged for the City Hall but there are indications that this will prove too small in view of Public interest in the Resolutions to be propos. ed; if so, the Meeting will at once be transferred to the Theatre Royal.

Amongst other Resolutions concerning local matters arising out of the strike and the general crisis in China' one will be specinity brought forward dealing with

the mistaken "Labour and Press views of the situation in Hongkong and China and Hongkong legislation in par ticular, which it is of importance should bphatically refuted.

I hope therefore that there will be 1 large meeting on Monday to endorse this Resolution, at any rate, with na uncertain. voler."

Therefore your oya suggestion thay business mana real Superintendent of Trade-should act as High Commissioner is well worthy of consideration.

Our enemies are using insidious and Stanley Baldwin and Mr. Bonar Law-eraseless propaganda in all directions which needs counterneting far can both business men-did very, well

be done. Prime Ministers. Indeed,, if a permanent official of Whitehall had to guide the destiny of the British Empire to-day it would be a calamity. He would fail to appreciate that the most urgent problem of the day is that of obtaining better markets for the products of the factories of Great Britain

There are many of us with interests in the Far East who are not satisfied with the present Gilbertion state of affairs which permits the Consul General of Canton and the Governor of Hongkong to work on the same problem without any direct communication. You cannot have

I hope that Monday night's Meeting will, at least, do something to lay tha truth before the Public at home.

I trust that the Press here will assist that object as far as lies in their Power. -Yours sincerely,
