GENERAL IMPRESSION THAT DEADLOCK IS NEARING

ITS CONCLUSION.

QUESTION OF RE-EMPLOYMENT TERMS.

The general impression" prevailing in the Colony yesterday was that the strike in Hongkong had spent itself, and it is agreeable to be able to record that, there are substantial grounds for such an opinion. Chief among theso is the fact that the number of absentee employees returning to ask for re-instatement his swollen steadily within the last day or two, and the volume shows every sign of increasing rapidly as the days go Da. No deânite policy has been laid down on the question of the treat- meat to be accorded to returning workers. Generally firms are adopting a." wait and see" attitude Former employees are being allowed to resume their tasks if their services are required, but no terms are made with them. They have to trust to chance, the employers allowing it to be understood that they will give the whole matter consideration" at some later date. It is also worthy of note that in certain cases where workers are being allowed to return to duty, their rate of pay, however long their previous experience or servicy, with the firms concerned may have been, is assessed at the lowest rate. This would appear to be an excellent system, which might well be followed by all employers. Yesterday's strike de tails are as under:
