INDIAN VOLUNTEERS GOOD
WORK."
The local strike outlook brightened in a marked degree yesterday, While the general deadlock still continues it is noteworthy that the number of strikers who are coming back to ask for re-employment is steadily increasing, and yesterday one shipping company had got back almost its entire clerical staff of Chinese. Growing numbers of men-urged no doubt by the beneficent spur of the recent deportation, regulations—are applying to the police authorities for jobs, and whereas so far, such ap plicants have been almost entirely of the coolic class, it was noticed yes- terday that a large proportion of them were made up from the more ambitious racks of Chinese labour. In general there is a strong indica. tion that the striking element-the rank and file and the carefully hidden leaders alike are being "brought to realize the futility of their efforts a against the admirably thorough organization of the authorities, and the rigid purpose of the European community to see this thing through "to a victorious issue. Far less pleasant hearing is contained in the news, published in another column, from a correspondent at Swatow, where apparently the condition of the British community is becoming intoler- able, and where it would appear that strong official action for their pro- tection and relief is urgently called for. Yesterday's local strike details are as under:-
