The paphlet, with its rosy pictur of life in Rusin, sirms to me to be both foolish and ignorant, but it is not nearly so foolish and ignorant as the Foreword by Mr. George Hicks with which it is graced. Let me quote one priceless gem and then let tas lock at the facts:

Perhaps we ought not to write of Russia as Russia. The word "Russia”” conjures up like an evil dream the dend empire of the Ciara, the land of the knout and the dungeon, of the bloody trail of exiles across the snow into the! far reaches of Siberia, of serfdom and superstition and murderous tyranny and repression. We ought Father to write of the great Union of Socialist Soviet Republies. which covers a sixth of the earth's surface. The Russians do not think of themselves as Russians, but a workers and peasants. No narrow national prejudices blur their outlock. Their national' anthem is the internationale,"

Mr. Hicks, as w see, regards the Russin of the Czars as a place of "mur- derous tyranny and repression," the im plied assumption being presumably that it is now quite a different sort of coun- try.

Now, I don't deny that there was re- pression under the Czars, but I am quite certain that it was of a very minor kind in comparison with what has been going on since the Bolsheviks assumed power.

Dory Mr. Hicks not know that 1,572,715 persons-igures ascertained from Bal shevik sources-were murdered by the Bolsheviks in Russin between their weiz- ing the reins of Government in 1917 and Alarch 1929

Perhaps he would regard the fact that, among the victims, 200,000 were soldiers and 350,000 intellectual citizens, as only just retribution, but how does he like hearing that 103,000 werkanen and no fewer than 813,000 peunts were also among the victims of this enlightened and humane, régime?

Or does he merely deny it --which seems the usual procedure adopted by Bolshevik apologists when faced by awkward facts. There is nothing gives the Russian Bolshevik, such sardinhie amusement as the manner in which their dupes in other countries rush to defend them from ebarges which they thera selves are cynically careless of admit ting.

SIMPLE DUPES.

A million people murdered by the Bolsheviks is merely the inevitable re- sult of a wonderful upheaval; one per- son exiled by the Czar was a shameful instance of cruel tyranny. It is a simple philosophy, is it not? But, then, dupes, are simple, or they wouldn't be dupes.

Let us read on. "The Russians do not think of themselves as Russiaus, but na workers and peasants.". But as only about half of 1 per cent. of Russians are Commanists, I don't suppose the state-
