"A VERY YOUNG MAN OF GENIUS."

PLACES AND PERSONA. By Maryot Asquith. (Thornton Butterworth,

1x.) Margot Asquith, for so the Countess of Oxford and Asquith signs herself, in her new volume of memoirs is as lively as ever, and ranges over a wide variety of topics with her characteristic deftness of

touch.

She is not always a flattering critic, bus no one will take her light-hearted as perities too tragically. Thus of Mr. Chur- chill she says:

He is what he always has beea-a very young man of genius, whose friend- ship is more valuable than his advice. No one has ever published, or ever will publish.

an arresting study of his character. though the least discerning could write an interesting account of his career. He is a great expressionist, a fine writer, and a loyal private friend. He is a rare sailor, but no one can he good navigator if his télescope is focussed upon a single star." The Countess is no admirer of talkers She such as Macaulay, who lecture. says:

Good conversation depends more. upon keeping it general, and no should be allowed to harangue. « No one ena put forward a fanciful.con- ception with alore picturesque original expression than Mr. Winston Churchill

Mrs. Asquith gives this account of a talk she had in Rome with Lord Dufferin in the days of her youth:

He advised me to marry; said I was too nice to be alone and too elever not to be helping some man. He begged e not to be led away by personal at- traction, and said respect was the first thing and love the second.

And to this subject of love she returns

near the end of her hook :"

Familiarity without intimacy "does not make for Lave-the only bridge by which we can escape the estranging conclusion that perhaps after all we have been given inconmunicable lives You must Ince ideals and not fuget with them. People should be a study, Pleasure an interruption. Work a con solation, and Hope a duty,

IN THE VISITORS BOOK. She gives the public one or two humor pus sayings which may be new to some. Among these is Archbishop Magee's entry in an hotel visitors' book at Bourns mouth:

I came down for rest and change; the writer's got the change and the pro prietor the rest.

It is a book which will amuse, and for it may be predicted all-the vogue of its predecessora,

THINKING IN MILLIONS.

Y EDWIN POGK.]

The shadow of the Budget is heavy upon us and, as usual, the newspapers have bruken out into an eruption figures.

Now one the most distressing things about figures is that the larger they are the less meaning they seem to have. The difference between two and three is one that even the most lovesick of nooilles can appreciate, whereas the differente between seventeen and eighteen hundred millions of pounds sems so inconsiderable that even those who pride themselves on

being eminently practical may be pardonTM

ed for somehow failing to grasp it.

Wis

If I were told that the sun 94,000,000 miles from the earth instead of only: $3,000,000 miles, I should not feel a little bit excited shout it, so long as my own patch of country did not become perceptibly colder. And yet a million miles is quite a long way much longer, for instance, than a two-miles trudge, late at night, when one is tired and hungry rád has a loose nail in one's boot.

I am tometimes, almost inclined to think that over-indulgence in statistics may become a degrading babit, like over- indulgence in drugs or strong drink. You inay or may: not consider this idea fantastic, but I have only to remind you of the well-known hairlessness and sleep lessness and general dobility of our millionaires to convince you that after all there may be something in it

Many bureaucrats, too, have fallen victims to the vice of thinking in millions. Nothing under raillión interests them, nothing under hundreds of millions ap-. peals to them. The habit of taking enre of the pence has descried, them. take a

Figures only can something when are relative. To deal magnificently in hundreds of inillions of pounds when one is speaking of tens of millions of people is perfectly reasonable; but to tu! at our heads concrete blocks of statistics, outnumbering the sands of the seashore, is merely to stun us and send us away with what little sense we had knocked clean out of us.

One has only to attend a meeting of Any sort, on any subject, to notice that when the speaker deals in mere figures his listeners mostly yawn, but that when he hands them ont visions they are all attention-Daily Mail.
