THRILLS IN THE AIR..

AFETY-FIRST" FLYING WHICH

LOOKED PERILOUS.

Some hair-raising exploits were uuder taken at the Croydon Aerodrome in the interest of safety first," but giving the impression of safety last.

Flight: Lieutenant Bulman demonstrated at a low the possibility of "atalling" altitude without crashing, under a new system, which he claimed giver the pilot

six times as much control as ever before,

Afterwards Mr. Fokker flew bis.own monoplane with eight passengers, slowed up and hung practically motionless.

AYLIGHT REVOLUTION.

For the first time in fylug bistory ùu aeroplace went up and openly broke every law hitherto banded down from pilot to pilot as an unwritten rule of their craft.

Experts stood on the ground amazed. Experienced airmen declared that it was a “revolution.".

Flying quite low at the London air station, Croydon, he deliberately stalled bis biplane, causing it to lose #ging speed. Those looking up held their breath, But the machine did not come spinning earth- ward, in an uncontrolled dive; it seemed to hang miraculously in the sky. Its stability soomed automatic.

Then, causing another gap from techni- cal spectators, Lieut. Balan swung his. machine round, with its nose up and its tall down, to an altogether impossible position, and entruly flew off as if nothing had happened.

YEARS OF EXSEARCH.

Os landing, not having turned a hair, he' told us about it. Yours of British research have gone into this wonderplane.

By a development of the Handley Page wing-slot system, working in conjunction with the balancing-places, the pilot has six' tates as much control over his aeroplane- as anyone has ever had before.

What it means," explained Lieut. Bulman, thust no pilot, given this system, should ever lose control of an aeroplane altogether.

If he stalls quite tar the ground be can prevent his machine spinning or diving, and even if he hits the ground while winking in a stalled position, the ability to keep his machine on an even heel will mean that all that will happen is that he gay damag bis under-carriage without any risk of injury to himself.

Then came more thrills. Mr. Authony Fokker, the famous Daten designer, want up in new Napier-Fokker "safety-first" commersial neplane. This rehin his been designed t maintain automatically sufficient flying speed.

With eight passengers in the salova: Mr. Fokker slowed up his machine till it appeared to hover almost motionless, and all that happened was that it lost altitude a trifle, and then recovered flying speed

At this juncture the French pilot of a big" Goliath" aeroplane, about to start for. Paris, is reported to have exciaimed: "Ze standing still in the air! I on do him!**.

At any rate, the crowning impression of the day was one of these great "air expres. ses," manoeuvred head-on to the rising wind, hovering above the crowd like some vast bird before it Bew off to Paris.

SHIPPING LAWSUIT.

DISPUTE OVER PURCHASE OF STEAMER.

The long-pending lawsuit against the British Jadia Company in connection with the repairs required by the steamer Amnta (now the Ryui uri), when sold to Mr. Nishi Masajiro, of Yamamoto- dori, 4-chome, Kobe, was down to be heard at Kobe on May 30th.

The plaintiff, in his statement of claim, says that he made a contract with the le fendant company on September 21st, 1923, for the purchase of the mute for £10,500. Of the purchasing money £1,600 was deposited with a London bank upan the contract being concluded in London." It was promised that the stentner-would be carefully examined at Bombay or Calcutta on the way to Kobe, where it was to be delivered to the purchaser. It arrived at Kobe in January, 1974, and, was delivered on January 3rd.on payment of the remainder of the pric The vessel was then docked at the Kdbo Mitsubishi yard. On January 30th it was discovered that the vessel's bottom was badly damaged and that the damage must have been done long before its arrival at Kobe. For repairs the plain. ti had to pay Y.16,735.98. This amount is claimed from the defendant company. The defendance is: Under Article 18 of the contract it was agreed that all complaints or disputes. that might arise werd to be decided by arbitration at This the port of the ship's delivery. arbitration was to be final in case of any trouble occur No claim na "und nooourt judgment was lie without submission to arbitration, Although the plaintiff once "proposed to arrange for arbitration, no definite pro position had yet been made as to whe ther British or Japanese inw. should apply. The defendants believe that the matter should be judged by British so far as the arbitration, was conect ed. Therefore this claim should be
