DEATH OF MRS. HALDANE.

VIGOROUS EDUCATIONAL METHODS A HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

In the year of the birth of Mrs. Haldane (mother of Lord Butane, who "relative of diest recently aged 101, hers, Loft Eldon, was George TV's Lord Chancellor and her eldest son sat on the Woolsack for the first time in the Liberal overnment in 1910, becoming the first Labour Lord Chancellor in the late Gov- erument. She had two other suns, par, of whom is an Oxford professor, and a daughter.

Ever since Viscount Haldane came to London as a young man. Mrs. Haldane kept up a daily correspondence with him. Her mornings were invariably devoted to reading and writing, and while her g literary tastes vers wide, she took special iuteris in historical works. Her know fedge of languages include German, French, talian. Latin and Greek.

Although she suffered ocensional at tacks of ururitis, her health was gener ally good. Her hearing was almost un- impaired, and she read her newspapers daily without the aid of spectacles. She Was ist-ngly interested in the affairs of the day, and her knowledge of current levents and policies was always abreast of the times. Last year she was said to be coaxing Lord Haldane to take her to the Wembley Exhibition. A wireless set was installed in her home at Cloan.
