Europe has had acute national rivalries, but no race problems like India. The fact that races ethnologically different are in close contact is the great problem of India. India has tried to solve it by the social regulation of differences on the one band, and by the spiritual recognition of unity on the ether. She has made grave blunders by setting up the boundary walls too rigidly between races: she has crip- pled the minds and narrowed the life of whole classes in trying to fit them into her social forins. But behind all this she has fostered a lofty spiritual idealism which sets at nought all human distine tions. The history of India has been only superficials a history of the rise and fall of kingdoms; the real history has been that of social life and of spiritual ideals.

ORGANIZED SELF-INTEREST. Upon this congeries of races which has never been a nation descended a real nation, organised through and through for self-defence, conquest, and exploita tion. This was for Ludia very different conquest from the inroads of other Asia tica, with their elephants and kettlegrams, mosques, palaces, and tombs. This was the invasion of a scientific machine, driven sum under a bill of sale.
