BOLSHEVISTS' MANIFESTO.
Balshovists in Canton have mandeered more than one-half of the space in most of the Canton vernacular press these few days around May 21st. A manifesto denouncing counter-revolu tionarim by the Central Executive Com-) mittee, a lengthy document, was publish- ed during the last two days by order of the Police, while statements against the Japanese 21 demands, supporting Peking; students in their recent act of agitating against unequal treaties, al protests against the reported American loan to mititarists in the island of Hainan, oc- cupied much of the space regularly reserved for news.
NOT IN THOSE TROUSERS. ·· A British steamer departing frow Canton for Swatow on May 20th refused to take pa board 13 cadgis of the Red Army school at Whampoa until they first discarded their uniforms and re- appeared in civilian garb, according to the Chinese Commercint News.
STRIKE FOLLOWS, STRIKE,- Like internecine war. the people of: Kwangtung Province in South China al-' ways have their labour strikes No sooner had the giguatic strike of 200,000 silk reeling girls in the filatures of the Canton al centre reached a settlement, than up came the strike of the Arsenal workers at Shekcheng; and be fore this has ended, now the makers of mattings in. Honam are on strike, the stevedores siding with them by declining to lend this article on outgoing vessels. Unless the dispute between the mechanics and the oil pressers over the sphere of induence in oil pressing factories is decided properly in Canton City, trouble between these two unions is feared, and this will perhaps affect the smooth run- ning of the city light house, water plant, and ferry launch services

C.B.E., who was Commissioner last year, has arrived, and was on April 29th joined by his staff of about eighty Chinese, in- eluding thirteen women, whose work will be the sericulture process. The male section is made up of four rattan workers, four workers in joss paper, four silver- smiths, four wood carvers, and four mat makers, two embroidery and two ivory. workers, six cooks, twenty salesmen, five shroffs, and servants and messengers. Mat-making and embroidery are features.

POKLO RICE.
POOR CROP DUE TO FLOODS IN MARCH.
Owing to an abandunt harvest of rice in Poklo last year, the price of rice dropped so low that about twenty-four catties were sold for a dollar, states the Canton Gazelle. Unfortunately this year the rice shoots in the fields were washed away by the flood during March and in consequence, the rice crop has been poor. At present, rice is sold at fourteen casties only for a dollar. The magistrate has issued a proclamation prohibiting the exportation of rice from the district, in order that the people may not suffer from high prices and a shortage of this daily necessity. The price remains a about 20 calties to the dollar since the embargo,
