·THE SHIP'S FUNNELS.

ገነ

Two new liners which have just beeri heunched have bøn Ätted with three funnels each instead of the one funnel which was fitted in their sister ships. The change, saya a writer in a Home

A Weekly Passenger and Freight Service paper, is curiously interesting, becauss

is mainly dictated by the human ela- ment and not by any special engineer- ing necessity.

Shor-living citizens who go to wu like plenty of funnels in their ships. There is a queer iden abroad that the more funnels a ship has the faster she steams.

a deeply rooted belief that the safety of the ship is determined by the mi ber of funnels..

It is a well-known fact in the ship- ping world that migrants have refused to mil in certain ships because there were not enough fannels. The literature that bad berki shown to them in Cracow, Przeugal, and Nijni Novgorod showed n ship with three funnels, and they were not going by any other ship, by any ship that was not important enough to have more than one fafinel.

Modern engineering practice has made | it possible, and indeed advantageous, ta

lead all the uptakes from the "boiler-}» rooms up to one funnel. There is more than one modern liner that has been equipped with extra funnels that are simply dummies, put in hy the archi tects for the sake of appearances or to mert the views of prospective pass*ngers.

There are only six four-fianelled mor chant ships in the world. The French Navy held the record for funnels with the armoured cruisers Renan and Wichelet, which had six funnels ruch, Several Navios have four-funnelled cruisers, but the tendency bis bem, to reduce the number..

alotor-ships, contrary to expectation, age nearly all equipped with at least que funnel. This is because there are boilers, even though no steam is required to propel the ship. The boilers are. uwd for "the central heating system. for providing running hot-water through out the ship, and as they are oil-fired ther must be a means of carrying away the fumes,
