With the death of Sir Henry Rider Haggard, K.B.E., the reading public of English speaking countries throughout

the world have lost a writer whose record is almost unique, in that he maintained his popularity at its height for a period of over forty years. A "Rider Haggard" novel was hailed just as eagerly in the closing stages of his career as when he burst into fame in the early 60's with King Solomon's Mines. But it was not in the sphere of writing alone that Sir. Rider Haggard distinguished him- alf. He was secretary in 1576, at the age of 19, to Sir Henry Bulwer. Gover- dor of Natal, and two years later was on the staff of Sir Theophilus Shep stone, Special Commissioner in the Transvaal. With the late General Brooks, RE, he formally hoisted the British Bag over the South African Re pablic at Pretoria on the Queen's Birth- day, 1977. He was Master of the High Court of the Transvaal in 1878, and took the post of adjutant of the Pretoria Horso in the following year. He became Barrister of Lincoln's Inn in 1884, in the
