Enquiries at the Royal Observatory, Hongkong, by a Daily Press reprezenta tive yesterday, elicited the information : that at 8.10 p.m. on the 5th, the Rayal Observatory seismograph began to record a violent earthquake. The place of origin was calculated to bo 1,200 miles, 8.8.3. of Hongkong. The highest shock was recorded at 8.16 p.m. when the no- plitude of the recorded warca wza 21.5 millimetres. This shock was followed by smaller ones, two hours and thirteen
